Dance Moms Star Kelly Hyland Shares Breast Cancer Diagnosis: 'I Have a Long Journey Ahead'

Dance moms star Kelly Hyland is open about her breast cancer diagnosis.

While talking to Hey! NewsThe 53-year-old reality star revealed she was diagnosed with stage 3 invasive cancer after finding a lump in her breast in late March.

“I cut myself for a mammogram,” Hyland said. “I just had one done eight months ago and the results were clear. However, this new mammogram and sonogram didn’t, they showed a mass.”

“In eight months, I went from clean results to a malignant mass,” Hyland said. “I was shocked that it had grown so quickly and I was scared of the battle I knew I was going to face.”

The reality star said the “first red flag” before the diagnosis was her “significant weight loss.”

“I lost enough weight that others noticed and looked for my diet tricks, but I didn’t change anything in my daily life to cause the loss,” she said in an interview.

Hyland knew it would be a “very difficult conversation” when the time came to tell her and Randy Hyland’s children Brooke, 26, Paige, 23, and Josh, 24, the diagnosis.

Hyland had to break the news from Florida while her children were in Pittsburgh. “I would have liked to tell them in person, but a phone call was the best I could do under the circumstances. I had a four-way conversation with all my kids because I wanted to tell them at the same time and make sure they all got the same information.”

Although her children remain hopeful, they know the family has a “long way to go” after losing their grandmother to cancer in 2019, Paige told the news outlet.

Hyland is currently undergoing chemotherapy and is on the second of six cycles of treatment, which will be followed by surgery, radiation and then 11 more treatments, the media confirmed.

“I have a long journey ahead of me,” she said, adding that she attends approximately 10-hour sessions with family members, “They are very long meetings. So I don’t want to put that responsibility on just one person.”

In addition to having the support of family members, Hyland — who currently lives with her older sister Carrie Matarazzo and her husband Dom while undergoing treatment in Pittsburgh — is “extremely supportive” of her colleague. Dance mom the stars also came together to offer their help.

She continues to film her Dear dance mom… and Back to Barre podcasts in an attempt to keep his life “as normal as possible.”

“The hardest part for me was accepting help from the people around me,” Hyland told the newspaper. “I’m a very independent person and, as a mom, I’m used to being the one who takes care of people, not the one taken care of.”

“I hate feeling like I’m inconveniencing anyone or being a burden in any way,” she continued. “However, I’m quickly realizing that I’m in for a very long and difficult journey, so I’m going to have to learn to accept people’s help because I’m very lucky to have people who want to take care of me during this time.”
