Daniel Radcliffe Is 'Very Happy' About Upcoming Harry Potter TV Series but Remains Coy About Returning to Hogwarts

Daniel Radcliffe is keeping his spell book closed for now.

The 37-year-old actor revealed in an interview with E! at the Drama League Awards on May 17 that she has no plans to appear in the upcoming Harry Potter series.

“Like the rest of the world, [I’m] I’m very excited to watch as an audience member,” Radcliffe told the news outlet.

When asked if he would star in the series, he replied: “No, I don’t think so.”

Radcliffe suggested that the show’s creators “very wisely wanted a clean break” to differentiate the show from the popular film franchise, which starred the English actor as the titular character and premiered from 2001 to 2011.

“I don’t know if it would work if we did something about it,” he added.

The actor declined to say how he would react if Max approached him about starring in the series, saying: “I’m going to be political about this and not engage in hypotheticals.”

In 2023, Radcliffe said he “definitely does not want” to be involved in a new adaptation of Max, said to be a “faithful adaptation” of JK Rowling’s bestseller, with each season covering one book and Rowling signing on as executive producer.

“My understanding is they’re trying to start from scratch and I’m sure whoever makes them will want to make their mark on it and probably won’t want to figure out how to get old Harry to star in this somewhere,” he said at the time.

“But I wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I’m very excited that that torch has passed,” he added. “But I don’t think I need to lay him down physically.”

That same month, Rowling – who has become a controversial figure for her transphobia – spoke out against Radcliffe and his Harry Potter co-star Emma Watson for their differing views. She wrote on social networks that she could “save my apologies”.

Radcliffe responded a few weeks later, saying of Rowling: “It makes me really sad, ultimately, because I look at the person I met, the time we met, and the books she wrote and the world she created, and it’s all for me so deeply empathetic.”

He expressed that the fantasy series “wouldn’t have happened without her” and emphasized how important the franchise was in his life. However, he ended up stating, “But that doesn’t mean you owe the things you truly believe to someone else your whole life.”

Radcliffe remained steadfast in his support for the community and said: “I will continue to support the rights of all LGBTQ people and have no further comment beyond that.”
