David Charles Weiss was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1956. After completing school education, he entered Washington University in St. Louis, USA, to obtain a bachelor’s degree in art. He then pursued his J.D. at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. Weiss’ father, Meyer Weiss, served as an IRS agent in Philadelphia from 1955 to 1984. While serving as an IRS agent, Meyer was convicted of accepting more than $200,000 in bribes from businessmen seeking to evade federal tax regulations. As a result, he was sentenced to four years in prison. According to a 1995 U.S. Tax Court ruling, Meyer Weiss used nearly $71,020 in bribe funds to pay for David’s college and law school tuition.

In 1984, David Weiss began serving as a law clerk to Judge Andrew D. Christie of the Delaware Supreme Court. From 1986 to 1989, David C. Weiss served as an Assistant United States Attorney, handling cases involving violent and white-collar crime. During this time, he also served as a Commercial Litigation Assistant in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. In 1989, David C. Weiss joined Duane Morris LLP as a commercial litigation attorney. In 1999, he became a partner at the law firm of Duane Morris. He later served as COO and Senior Vice President of a financial services company called The Siegfried Group.

In 1996, the firm of David C. Weiss represented the family of Anne Marie Fahey while she was in private practice. Anne Marie was secretary to the governor of Delaware who disappeared in 1996. He rejoined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware in 2007 as First Assistant U.S. Attorney. David C. Weiss led the prosecution of Christopher Tigani, who solicited donations for beer distributors. Joe Biden’s 2008 presidential campaign failed. Tigani was later found guilty of violating campaign finance laws. During the Obama administration from 2009 to 2017, he served as the office’s top deputy and served as interim U.S. attorney.

In 2017, David Weiss became Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware. Prior to that, he served as interim federal prosecutor in the same district. In 2021, Weiss’ office suffered a setback in a high-profile corporate case. A federal appeals court has overturned the convictions of four former Wilmington Trust Co. executives accused of concealing troubled loans after the 2008 financial crisis. On February 15, 2018, he was formally appointed prosecutor of the United States Department of Justice by voice vote. David C. Weiss was sworn in on February 22, 2018.
