The actor and singer is now being praised for his “wonderful” time on stage and screen.

A post shared today on his Twitter/X read: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I announce that dear David has passed away peacefully.

“At this time of such sadness, we will be thinking of the wonderful man he was and the truly fantastic career he had on stage and screen.”

Kernan was known as an interpreter of Stephen Sondheim songs, but also appeared in musicals and variety shows during the 1960s and 70s.

During 1972 he starred in the British comedy Carry On Abroad and played Nicholas.

He was then nominated for a 1977 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.

The nomination came after his appearance in the original Broadway production of Side by Side by Sondheim.

The Stephen Sondheim Society, of which Kernan was a patron, honored him today.

They said he was a “lovely, funny man” who became a household name.

Mandy Dixon, past president of the society, wrote: “David was a wonderful, witty man whose singing and advocacy for Sondheim’s work was second to none.

“In the many Sondheim workshops the Company ran at the Theater Museum in the late 1990s, he generously lent his expertise in performing Sondheim to young actors who are now household names.

“He also raised huge sums of money for AIDS charities by putting on one-night musical theater shows, at a time when it was not popular.

“However, I think my best memory of him was him and his leather-clad companion getting increasingly drunk and merry at the after-party celebrating Sondheim’s concert.”
