DDG Recalls How He ‘Invited’ Himself to First Date with Halle Bailey (Exclusive)

DDG isn’t shy about how his and Halle Bailey’s romance started!

While speaking with PEOPLE at the Recording Academy Awards presented by Black Music Collective on Thursday, the 26-year-old rapper said he “invited” himself to go to the movies with her one night after dinner.

“We went to an Ethiopian restaurant, and then I thought that was the end of the date, and then she said, ‘After I go to the movies.’ I thought, ‘With who?’ She was like ‘Sama,’ and then I called myself in. And now here we are with the baby,” DDG, born Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., shared with PEOPLE.

As for the movie the two ended up watching, Bailey, 23, revealed that they did Dune and said that being in love is “such a great feeling.”

“I think everyone deserves to be in love and happy,” she added. The singer announced the birth of their first child in January.

“Even though we’re only a few days into the new year, the biggest thing 2023 could do for me is bring me my son.. welcome to the world my halo 🥰👼🏽 ✨the world is desperate to meet you 😉 🤣♥️,” Bailey wrote on Instagram next to a photo of him holding a newborn by the hand. As for the name Halo, Bailey previously told PEOPLE that his name was DDG’s idea.

“He’s the one who came up with his name. We just hit it off and we love it. I love the name Halo,” she told PEOPLE. DDG also inspired the music behind her upcoming debut solo album.

“It’s been a really nice transformational time for me. I have all this new material to write about. It’s like, What the hell did I just experience and go through? A whirlwind of improbability,” said u Cosmopolitan cover story in September 2023.

“You never know what you’re capable of until you go through it. I was very creatively inspired, and then I fell in love from there. And so I really just played with those themes in my music,” Bailey added.

At this year’s Grammy Awards, Bailey was nominated in the R&B Song category for her solo song “Angel.”

She wrote about the nomination on Instagram: “Oh my God, you people, I feel like I’m in a dream 💭😭 I just got off the plane and found out this news, God is so good, I’m so grateful and in disbelief 😭❤️✨I’m going to cry all day day.”
