Deepika Padukone isn’t just a globally acclaimed actress and style icon — she’s also a home design connoisseur!
While speaking exclusively with PEOPLE about her new Pottery Barn line, which launched Thursday night, Fighter the star has been open about how each selected piece in the collection is a reflection of her Indian culture and her personal style.
“I like colors that are tone-on-tone neutrals and lots of pastels, but it also has to be luxurious,” Padukone tells PEOPLE. “And when I say luxurious, I don’t necessarily mean expensive, but in terms of quality. To me, luxury is the way you feel.”
The collection contains a number of products for the home in a neutral color palette. The American line offers bedding, embroidered cushions, rugs and ornaments, while the crockery and tableware range is available exclusively in India, the Middle East and the Philippines.

One of her favorite pieces in the line “would be the little bowls, which in India we call Katori,” Om Shanti Om shares of alum. “The little bowls we use are quite unique to us in terms of our culture and the way we eat. I think the Indian community in particular will be excited about that.”
She adds that it was “really special” for Pottery Barn to realize the importance of bowls and include them in the India, Middle East and Philippines range.

For the 82-East co-founder, the products in the line are truly an “extension” of her home, she says. He describes his home base in India as “a treat for the eyes” mixed with “little pockets of drama”.
She continues, “I don’t think I can just go one way or one particular aesthetic. So if a piece of furniture is modern, then I have to find something around it to make it less modern. I like to mix things, so it’s modern, mixed with classic.”

Incorporating Indian art into her home is essential to Padukone, as is decor inspired by her travels.
“I think if I had to sum up my style today, it would really be a mix of different things that I’ve seen from all over the world,” she adds.

On whether any of the iconic films she’s starred in over the course of her career have inspired her design style, Padukone says, “I’m sure the movie sets we spend so much time on have an influence on the way I decorate my spaces.”
She refers to director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films – like Padmaavat or Bajirao Mastani in which she acted, to name a few – most likely played a part in the “pockets of drama” in her house.

Padukone also recalls a funny memory of the director being influenced by the style of her home.
“I remember the first time Sanjay Leela Bhansali came to my house. I had these two prints by Raja Ravi Varma,” she said, referring to the famous Indian painter. “And a few months later when we were shooting, he had a similar thing on his set. I remember him saying to me, ‘You remember these. I saw them at your house on my way out.’ ”

Bringing her design aesthetic and influences from her travels and film sets to life with Pottery Barn was a “really exciting” process, notes Padukone.
“They just understand who I am, what I like and what I don’t like,” which made starting the line a truly “collaborative” journey, she says.
“We’ve been collaborative in this process with every single part going back and forth, feedback, what’s working, what’s not working,” she adds. “So I really understood my likes and dislikes and took that into the collection, whether it was bedspreads, cushions, crockery, photo frames, candles, etc. The process of collaborating and creating was really exciting. ”
