Stephen, 36, ordered a pizza through a delivery app, but Rocha arrived down the street from his home.

When Stephen went to get his food, he forgot his phone – sparking a row over his delivery code.

He said the argument got out of hand and Rocha started attacking him.

The plumber raised his hand towards Rocha’s helmet – but she bit his thumb.

Stephen told the BBC: “I just remember shaking her helmet trying to get it off.”

Rocha bit down on Stephen’s thumb before finally letting go.

The force with which she must have bitten would have taken him clean off. It’s like it went through a chainsaw

The Hampshire man said he then raised his hand and “spattered her with blood”.

Stephen said: “The force with which she must have bitten would have taken him completely off.

Rocha pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm after the attack in December 2022.

The 35-year-old will be sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on May 3.

Plumber Stephen has been unable to work since his thumb was severed above the knuckle – saying he is “financially devastated”.

But he said he had not received compensation from Deliveroo, as the company could not be held legally liable.

Part of Stephen’s big toe was transplanted onto the stump of his missing big toe after months of reconstructive surgery.

Deliveroo said: “This was a terrible incident. We have immediately terminated the account of the driver in question.”

The spokesman added: “We have co-operated fully with the police in their investigation.

“Deliveroo riders are self-employed, as the UK courts have repeatedly confirmed.

“Replacement is and always has been a common feature of self-employment – it’s not specific to Deliveroo, or to our sector.”
