Denzel Washington Is Proud of Director Son Malcolm at The Piano Lesson Premiere: 'Excited About Our Future' (Exclusive)

Denzel Washington is one proud dad.

The two-time Oscar winner supported his youngest son, Malcolm Washington (33), who is making his directorial debut with the film Piano lessonat the Toronto International Film Festival on Tuesday, September 10. Denzel, 69, is the producer of the Netflix film, an adaptation of August Wilson’s play.

Speaking to PEOPLE on the red carpet, Denzel says, “I’m proud to be a part of August Wilson in some small way.”

From his son Malcolm, Gladiator II the actor adds, “I’m happy that people will get a chance to see what kind of director Malcolm is. I’m excited about our future together with August Wilson.”

The project is a family affair for the Washington family. Malcolm’s older brother John David Washington (40) also stars, while sister Katia Washington (37) produced alongside her father.

Malcolm’s film is also dedicated to his mother Pauletta; before the check-out rush, the title card reads “For Mom”.

“This movie is so personal to me, and the people I got to shoot it with are the closest people in my life,” Malcolm previously told PEOPLE at the Telluride Film Festival, where the film had its world premiere. – My mom was at the center of it.

Samuel L. Jackson and Danielle Deadwyler also star in the drama.

“The Charles family battle is to blame,” begins the film’s synopsis. “At the center is a prized heirloom piano that separates two siblings. On the one hand, the brother (John David) plans to build the family fortune by selling it.”

“On the other hand, the sister (Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to keep the only trace of the family legacy. Their uncle (Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t keep the ghosts of the past at bay,” the synopsis adds.

Piano lesson was first produced as a play in 1987. Jackson originated the role of Boy Willie when it was performed at the Yale Repertory Theatre, and later worked as an understudy for several roles when the production arrived on Broadway in 1990.

The new film also features performances from Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Jerrika Hinton, Gail Bean and Corey Hawkins. The music was composed by two-time Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat.

Piano lesson is in select theaters on November 8th, then on Netflix on November 22nd.
