Denzel Washington Says He ‘Made Some Real Clunkers’ in the ’90s After Malcolm X: ‘I Was Earning. I Had Responsibilities’

Denzel Washington admits that his filmography is not perfect.

Before going out Gladiator IIThe 69-year-old actor spoke about his career in an interview with The Sunday Timesreleased on Friday, November 15, and pointed out that not all of his films were hits.

“After Malcolm X I made real strums. Look for them – I won’t say their names,” he told the newspaper. “They are all in their nineties. But I was making money. I had responsibilities.”

However, he said that his films in the 2000s, which included Remember the Titans and Training dayhe did much better. He also noted that it all fit the quote he lived by: “In life you learn, you earn and then you give back – as in giving back.”

“So I was making money at that time,” he explained. “With a great agent, my career was built on making money and so the money started, and then life started, with bills, four kids and a house.”

Equalizer the actor also revealed that he was “guilty” of not watching his films to the end, similar to Judi Dench. He admitted that he “watches” some parts of the films “so I know what I’m talking about”, but leaves the rest unfinished.

“I haven’t watched any film from my past from beginning to end, not even Malcolm XWashington said. “All you see is what you did wrong. And why would you even do that?”

Earlier this week, Washington shared information about Australia Today’s show that his acting career has taken on a new focus now that he’s older and that he’s “only interested in working with the best and moving forward.”

“I don’t know how many more films I’ll make. Probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done. I played Othello at 22; I’m about to Othello at 70,” he said, referring to his upcoming Broadway performance in Shakespeare Othello with Jake Gyllenhaal.

“After that I play Hannibal. After that I talked to Steve McQueen about the movie. After that Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black panther“, he added.

Gladiator II will be released in cinemas on 22.11.
