Dharmendra Pradhan began his political career in 1983, while he was still in college. He is an activist with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), an all-India students’ organization affiliated with the RSS. In 1985, he was appointed president of the Talcher College Student Union. In 1995, he became ABVP national secretary.

Later, in 2004, he was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from Deoghar constituency and became a member of the Energy Committee and Petitions Committee. In 2007, he was appointed as a member of the Energy Standing Committee. In 2012, he was elected as a member of the Bihar Assembly. He has served as a member of the Government Assurance Committee, the Juvenile Communications Committee, which scrutinizes matters related to the allocation and pricing of telecommunications licenses and spectrum, the Rural Development Committee and the Agriculture Committee. He also served as the election in-charge of Bihar and party affairs in Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Odisha. On July 7, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reshuffled the cabinet and Dharmendra Pradhan was appointed Minister of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

During his tenure as Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was announced, under which deposit-free LPG cooking gas connections are provided to very poor (below poverty line) households in the names of adult women. Dharmendra Pradhan has handed over LPG connections to 70 million households within 34 months of the launch of the scheme, which is considered one of the biggest success stories of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and is cited as the major key factor in winning the project one.
