Dia Mirza is the daughter of Frank Handrich, a German Catholic and graphic and industrial fair designer, architect, artist and interior designer in Munich, and Deepa. is a Bangladeshi interior designer and landscape designer.
When she was four and a half, her parents divorced. Her mother Deepa was married to Ahmed Mirza (died in 2003), a Dakini Muslim man from Hyderabad. She took her stepfather’s last name. She is the only child of her parents.
Although she was raised of different races, she practiced Hinduism.

Later, she started dating Mumbai-based businessman Vaibhav Rekhi and married him on February 15, 2021, at his residence in Bandra, Mumbai. The wedding ceremony is performed by a priestess.
Dia and Vibhav welcomed a baby boy in May 2021; however, they shared the news with the public on July 14, 2021. They named their son Avyaan Azaad.

Models and beauty pageants
While in school, Dia Mirza worked as a marketing executive at a multimedia company called Neeraj’s Multi-media Studio. At the same time, she also served as a model for brands such as Lipton, Wall’s ice cream and Emami. In 2000, she participated in the Femina Miss India competition and won the titles of Miss Beautiful Smile, Miss Avon and Miss Close-up Smile, and was the second runner-up in the pageant.
Later, she was selected to participate in the Miss Asia Pacific beauty pageant and won the championship. In 2000, India completed a hat-trick of international beauty pageants (Lara Dutta won Miss Universe and Priyanka Chopra won Miss World).

Dia Mirza made her acting debut in 2001 with the role of “Reena Malhotra” in the film “Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein”.
She subsequently acted in many successful films such as Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge (2002), Dum (2003), Tumsa Nahin Dekha – A Love Story (2004), Parineeta (2005), Lage Raho Munnabhai” (2006), “Salam Mumbai” (2016)) and Sanzhou (2018). She co-owns a production called Born Free Entertainment with her ex-husband.
The first film produced under the banner was Love Breakups Zindagi (2011).

She has been involved with Cancer Patients Aid Society, Spasm Society of India, PETA, CRY and NDTV Greenathon and worked with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to spread HIV awareness and prevent abortions.
In 2010, she adopted two cheetah cubs from the Prince of Wales Zoo in Lucknow. Dia and Aamir Khan have publicly come out in support of Narmada Bachao Andolan. Mirza endorsed the brand ‘The Body Shop’ for their stance on banning animal testing and promoting recycled packaging and natural products. On World Environment Day 2017, she was appointed as the brand ambassador by Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). She supports WTI’s activities and is a founding member of the WTI Club Nature initiative.
Apart from this, she is also the Eco Ambassador of Panasonic, the Swachh Saathi Youth Program Ambassador of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the first artist ambassador of Save the Children India and the Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Environment Program in India.

- In 2019, amid the ongoing CAA protests in India, Dia Mirza expressed her views on the issue and said:
My mother is Hindu, my biological father is Christian, and my adoptive father is Muslim. My religious identity is blank in all official documents. Does religious belief determine that I am Indian? It has never happened and I hope it never happens. #OneIndia #India”
However, this caused dissatisfaction among netizens, who lashed out at her; claiming that she knew nothing about the behavior and was just trying to be smart.
- In 2016, Dia tweeted against the backdrop of water scarcity in Maharashtra:

However, her comments caused an uproar and earned her some hatred. She later apologized and clarified her position, saying:

If my tweet contributed to this situation, I unequivocally apologize. “Having said that, the fact remains that various parts of our country are facing severe water shortage problems. According to a report I read in April last year, the drought in Maharashtra has affected more than 9 million farmers and This number is still increasing. In October last year, the Maharashtra government officially declared 14,708 villages out of the state’s 43,000 villages to be in a “drought-like state”.
- Dia Mirza was found to be in jail in 2015 after RSS president Mohan Bhagwat commented that Mother Teresa’s conversion to Christianity was the main reason for her service to the poor.
