The Phoenix Mercury, who finished 8-26 in 2003, selected Diana Taurasi first overall in the 2004 WNBA Draft. In her WNBA debut, she scored 22 points in the Mercury’s 72–66 loss to the Sacramento Monarchs. She was also the recipient of the WNBA Rookie of the Year award. Similarly, Diana Taurasi’s 2006 season would be remembered as a turning point in her career, as she excelled under Westhead. She was the league’s top scorer and was selected for the All-Star game for the third time in a row. With 121 three-pointers in one season, she set a WNBA record.
Diana Taurasi reached the WNBA Playoffs for the first time in 2007.
