Did Taxi Star Andy Kaufman Fake His Death? His Best Friend Has Some Thoughts

The death of Andy Kaufman has collected as many different opinions as his life.

The idea that a comedian may or may not fake his own death Thank you very muchnewly renovated documentary director Emmy Alex Boverman. Kaufman played Latka Gravas on ABC Sitcom Taxi From 1978 to 1983 and died of lung cancer in 1984 at the age of 35.

In a clip from an interview with Kaufman’s Taxi Kostar Danny Devito from shortly after Kaufman’s death, she remembers that their colleague Kostar Carol Kane responded at the comedian’s funeral.

“She went to the funeral. She said she went to the suitcase and knocked him because she didn’t even think Andy left at that moment. That’s how he had us,” Devita says in the archives.

Asked about the long -standing rumors that the comedian did not really die in 1984, his best friend, writer Bob Zmurd, says, “So, I have to look here what I say, keep yourself here.”

“Because, did Andy Kaufman fake his death or not? One thing I know, if Andy Kaufman didn’t die, what would he do? He would fake his own death,” he says.

The documentary is played between Zmurda and Kaufman on the subject. Zmurda says the root of the idea was obvious.

“Think of that. Lying his death … Where’s Andy that assumption? His parents!” He says.

“They faked Papu’s death,” he continues, referring to Kaufman’s beloved grandfather. When Pope died, Kaufman’s parents told her son she wasn’t on a trip. Kaufman did not reveal the truth until he was older. “They faked him and said he didn’t die,” Zmurda adds. “Lie, a groomed lie, can change reality. Reality can always be maneuvered and control. This is very important.”

Lynne Margulies, who was Kaufman’s girlfriend at the time of his death, admits: “We talked about it.”

“[We talked about] How many years he would have to stay away, you know, they really loved … and for years they have become longer and longer, because for a year it has not been enough. Then it would be 10 years old, Oh, maybe 10 years, maybe like 20 years or about 30 years, “she says.

“And it’s like,” Do you think people will still remember me in 30 years, if I come back? “And I would say,” Well, they will, if you come back. “”

Bob Pagani, Kaufman’s another friend and a professional fraud says, “Now it’s almost 40, you know what I mean? But on the other hand, a curse, would I admire the dedication to the little one.”

Although Kaufman remembers for his extraordinary comedy, he had a serious side, Margulies recalls.

“After we had the premiere [Kaufman’s 1983 film] My breakfast with blassie. He looked at me and he was very serious, “she says.

“And he said, ‘Lynn, I want me to promise me to keep my work I live. I want my whole life to be perceived as a long, confusing, beautiful performance. Like, if gravel descended into the water, it would fall apart and just continue to shoot both fishing and blowing and never stops. It just doesn’t stop.
