State Bank of India is a state-owned company established in 1955. In 1984, Dinesh Khara was hired as a probationary officer by the State Bank of India (SBI). During his tenure with SBI, he served as Managing Director (MD) of Global Banks and Subsidiaries, Managing Director of State Bank Associates and Subsidiaries and Chief General Manager, Bhopal Circle Branch. As chief general manager, he oversees approximately 1,400 branches.
Dinesh also worked in the international banking group’s overseas expansion arm and is credited with helping acquire Bank India International, Mauritius (now SBI Mauritius). He was also assigned to overseas duty in Chicago. He also served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SBI Funds Management Pvt. Ltd. (SBIMF). As MD and CEO, he led the company to become the fifth largest mutual fund in India. He was appointed as Managing Director of SBI on August 9, 2016 for a term of three years. In 2019, after performance appraisal, his term was extended for 2 years. He is responsible for banking operations, including international banking, corporate banking and treasury operations. He is credited with the successful merger of SBI with its five associate banks and Bhartiya Mahila Bank. His initiatives propelled SBI among the top 50 banks globally. In 2017, Dinesh and Rajnish Kumar (former SBI chairman and then managing director) applied for the chairmanship; while Rajnish was selected for the post, it was later decided that Dinesh would be the chairman. Although Dinesh is slated to retire in 2021, he was appointed chairman of SBI on October 7, 2020 for a term of three years.

The Ministry of Finance issued a statement saying,
Dinesh Kumar Khara has been appointed as Chairman of the Bank for a period of 3 years with effect from the date of taking over the position on or after October 7, 2020 or until further orders, whichever is earlier. ”
In October 2023, the government extended his term as chairman until August 2024, when Dinesh turned 63.

Threat of kidnapping
In 2022, while Dinesh Khara was chairman, his aides received threatening phone calls from a man calling himself Mohammed Jia Ul Ali. The caller requested the bank to sanction a loan of Rs. 1 million. The caller threatened to kidnap and murder the SBI chairman if this was not done. He further threatened to bomb the bank’s corporate offices. The bank’s assistant security manager lodged a complaint with Mumbai police. They traced the call to West Bengal and sent a team of Mumbai police to arrest the caller.
