Career
Despite refusing to work out for any team before the draft, Dion Waiters was selected fourth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2012. He was then selected to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge game during the NBA All-Star Weekend in 2013. Finally, after his rookie season, he was named the NBA’s fourth-best rookie and finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting with 21 points. In addition, in 2014 he was able to compete in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge.
Similarly, in a loss to the Miami Heat that same year, he recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and a career-high 11 assists. Dion was traded from the Cavaliers to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a three-team trade in January 2015. He was then able to sign with the Miami Heat on July 26, 2016. Waiters re-signed with the Heat on July 7, 2017. He was then assigned to the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Miami’s NBA G League affiliate, on December 28, 2018. He then made another appearance for the Heat on January 2, 2019. However, on October 19, 2019, he was suspended for Miami’s first game of the 2019–20 season for “conduct detrimental to the team”. In addition, he had to miss the game due to a panic attack he had while flying to the game. Two days later, the Heat suspended him for ten games for consuming edibles, including the previous game he missed.
Furthermore, Dion Waiters was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-team trade that also included the Minnesota Timberwolves on February 6, 2020, and was waived by the Grizzlies three days later. He signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in March 2020 and made his debut on July 30, 2020.
