Donna Kelce Regrets Response to Today Show Question About Taylor Swift, Says She Loves Seeing Travis 'Happier'

Mom Kelce is happy about her youngest son’s new romance, and she said that he “shot for the stars!”

Donna Kelce still feels fear when she recalls the interview in which she was asked about her son Travis Kelce’s relationship with Taylor Swift.

For WSJ. magazine’s December/January cover story on Travis, writer JR Moehringer spoke with Donna, 71, about her son’s meteoric rise to fame, and she reflected on an interview she gave in early October to Today show that went viral with Swifties convinced the NFL mom wasn’t a fan of the pop superstar.

As Donna sits down on the Todayshe was asked about her first encounter with Swift, 33, in the suite at a Kansas City Chiefs game.

After declaring that the romance between her younger son and the 12-time Grammy winner is “pretty new,” Donna simply said that hanging out with Swift is “fine.”

According to WSJ, after the interview aired, Travis immediately called his mother to reassure her that she did a good job. To put her at ease, the professional ballerina also complimented the green glasses she wore that day.

Now that Travis and Swift’s relationship has entered a “pretty new” phase, Donna feels she can open up a little more, she told WSJ.

“I can tell you this,” she told the outlet, who said she “beamed” with her response, “He’s happier than I’ve seen him in a long time… God bless him. He was shooting for the stars!”

While Donna was careful not to reveal every detail of her youngest son’s private life, she said anyone trying to figure it out should look up Travis’ older brother, Jason Kelce.

Travis “could never quite catch up” to Jason, 36, she said of when her boys were younger. “He was always just second, he just wanted to be the best, but he never succeeded.”

However, she could always count on the Chiefs tight end to catch up with his older brother in the kitchen. “They would sit down and eat whole chickens,” she said of their appetites.

Also interviewed for the cover, Jason spoke proudly of Travis’ cheerful disposition.

“He just lives his life with so much joy,” the 36-year-old Philadelphia Eagles center said. “He always somehow surrounds himself with people who are funny, who have a zest for life; that’s one of the things that defines him.”

Jason recalled family gatherings before fame, when they had dinner together and watched television.

“We had one of those coffee tables where the top would lift up and meet you in the face if you were eating,” said the father of three with a loud and boisterous laugh.

In the interview, Travis opens up about his relationship with Swift, from how they met to what he admires about the twelve-time Grammy winner. Calling Swift both “funny” and a “genius,” he also revealed that he and the pop superstar share a similar outlook on family and work.

“Everybody knows I’m a family man,” he said. “Her team is her family. Her family does a lot of things in terms of touring, marketing, presence, so I think she has a lot of those values ​​as well, which is in the right direction for me.”
