Monticone reportedly began stealing fentanyl in June 2020 for his own use. To make it look like all the narcotics were there, a former nurse accessed secure storage areas, stole vials of fentanyl, used a syringe to draw the drugs out of the vials, and then reinjected the saline solution into the vials. Investigations also revealed that from June to October, more than 75% of the fentanyl administered to patients at the Yale REI Clinic was contaminated with saline. Additionally, some of the vials contained diluted fentanyl, while others contained only saline and no medication.
