Wedding ceremonies disrupted due to violation of COVID-19 regulations
In April 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a video of him went viral on social media in which he, in his capacity as the District Magistrate of West Tripura, raided two weddings in Agartala and shouted and abused those who violated COVID-19 guidelines. One of the wedding venues was Manikya Palace, a wedding hall at the north gate of the palace compound.
In the video, Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav asked people to evacuate the wedding hall as the Agartala Municipal Council (AMC) had imposed a curfew from 10 pm in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also ordered the sealing of the wedding hall and prohibited its operation from April 26, 2021. All the guests of both the weddings, including the bride and groom, were booked for violating the Epidemic Diseases Act, the Disaster Management Act, and violating curfew guidelines under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
He then recommended the suspension of the East Agartala police chief and other police officers on duty that day. His actions were both appreciated and criticized. Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar called his actions “undesirable” and the CPIM demanded strict action against Yadav’s actions. West Tripura MP and BJP leader Pratima Bhomik said in an interview,
The government is taking the necessary steps to cut off the chain of transmission of the coronavirus. But what happened last night was most unwelcome. It should not have happened.”
