The 21-year-old escaped from HMP Wandsworth on Wednesday morning after hiding under a food delivery van.

An extensive four-day police manhunt ended shortly before 11am today when officers swooped on a canal in Northolt, west London.

He was found with a bicycle, sleeping bag and a Waitrose cooler bag of groceries when plainclothes officers swooped in, before forensics arrived to search the scene.

Eyewitness Ethan Andrews was on his way to a nearby gym when he saw officers holding the suspect near the Grand Union Canal Bridge.

The 20-year-old University of Bath student from west London told The Sun: “I was crossing the bridge and saw this man with cable ties around his arms.

“One of the officers said, ‘We are undercover officers.’

The guy was on a bike and had a sleeping bag – he appeared to have changed.

“I follow the news and I recognized him and said, ‘Is that the guy who was in jail?’, and one of the officers said ‘yes.’

“I took out my phone and started filming. The police told me not to, but how often will I see something like this again?

TRAPED FUGITIVE

The Metropolitan Police today confirmed that Khalifa has been caught.

Scotland Yard said in a statement: “The Metropolitan Police arrested Daniel Khalife, who escaped from HMP Wandsworth on Wednesday 6 September.

“He was arrested by officers shortly before 11am today in the Chiswick area and is currently in police custody.

“We would like to thank the public and the media for their support throughout our investigation to locate Khalife and we will provide further information regarding his arrest in due course.”

And this afternoon they discovered that he was taken off the bike by plainclothes policemen who finally caught him.

Commander Dominic Murphy, who heads the Met’s counter-terrorism command, said Khalifa had “fully co-operated” with officers when he was detained.

The suspect was taken to a police station in West London.

Captain Murphy said Khalife will “still be held accountable for the original offences”.

Rishi Sunak said he was “very glad” that Khalifa had been arrested, while praising the efforts of the police and the public to find him.

He said: “This is obviously very welcome news. And once again, I thank the police and the public for their help.”

He escaped in a chef’s uniform of a white short-sleeved shirt, red and white checked trousers and brown steel-toed boots.

The terror suspect is said to have used makeshift straps to attach himself to a truck as he was waved from prison.

A member of the public reported seeing a man resembling a terror suspect walking away from a BidFood delivery van which had stopped near the Wandsworth roundabout, at the top of Trinity Road.

He was then spotted walking towards the center of Wandsworth.

Mr Murphy said: “My message to him is to hand yourself in, either call us or go to your local police station and hand yourself in.

“With the reward we’re offering today and the incredible support we’ve had from the public and the media, we’re going to get closer to you, Daniel, you really have to come in and turn yourself in.”
