Drew Scott Says He and 'Rockstar Mom' Linda Phan Are 'Super Excited' About New Baby (Exclusive)

The couple announced they were expecting their second child in an Instagram post on Jan. 22

Drew Scott can’t help but gush about his wife and future mother of two.

Days after announcing that he and Linda Phan are expecting their second child together, the HGTV star spoke with PEOPLE on the red carpet at the Environmental Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday and said the couple is overjoyed that their family increases.

“We are super excited. Linda is already a rock star mom,” Scott, 45, tells PEOPLE.

He’s also excited to see their son Parker, 20 months, a “big brother.”

“I love seeing Linda as a mom, and the idea of a couple of kids running around is pretty cool. I have siblings, so it’s pretty cool for Parker to have a sibling.”

As for how aware the child is of the changes coming, Scott says, “I think he knows something. If we say, ‘Where’s the baby?’, he puts his hand on his stomach. So he knows something, but I don’t know if he’s fully figured it out yet.”

The couple is also waiting to reveal the baby’s gender until Phan gives birth, as they did with Parker. “We don’t actually know if it’s going to be a boy or a girl, so it’s going to be a surprise.”

“I think it’s just the little things. And it’s really great because we have a lot of family time, Jonathan [Scott] Zooey [Deschanel]and the kids,” explains Drew. His brother Jonathan is the parent of Zooey Deschanel’s two children — 6-year-old son Charlie and 7-year-old daughter Elsie — with the actress, 43, and her ex-husband Jacob Pechenik.

“My parents are here. Linda’s mom and then Linda’s sister also live next door with their kids. So whenever we do something, we’re all very focused on the environment,” adds Drew, also sharing that the family doesn’t use plastic for disposable and compostable.

Which led to Drew’s little boy picking up some great habits, literally.

“So Parker, well, if he sees something on the ground, he’s only 20 months old, he’ll run and get it and it’ll go in the recycling bin or the trash, whichever it is, and he” I’ll throw it in. And it’s funny to me because… at that age I would have eaten dirt,” he jokes.

The couple announced they were trying in a sweet joint Instagram post earlier this month.

“Round 2👶,” they captioned the photo, which showed Parker touching Phan’s growing belly. “I hope Parker is ready for a little company❤️❤️.”

“I went back to school doing my Executive MBA and had to fly to Boston two months after Parker was born for two weeks,” Drew recalled. “The early stages of birth are a difficult time for a parent to be alone.”

Although Phan was “good at letting me know what she needed to handle everything, but after doing that, I realized how easy it can be to just let Linda take the reins on everything, Parker—I’m at work all day, and she is with him, so I easily forget that I am also a parent here and that I have certain obligations.”

He continued, “Having a real, open dialogue between Linda and I is a big part of being a better father because she’ll give me a little reminder if I’m not doing something I promised. It’s not just about the baby, it’s about your communication with your partner.”
