Dru Joyce News
After practise at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, Dru Joyce III is the kind of coach who may challenge his players to a push-up competition.
The 37-year-old Joyce was reunited with Keith Dambrot, who coached him in high school at St. Vincent-St. Mary and in college at the University of Akron, when he was hired associate head coach at Duquesne in May. Joyce and Dambrot were a player-coach team who enjoyed a lot of success.
To begin with, Joyce was a crucial member of the St. Vincent-St. Mary teams that Dambrot guided to back-to-back state championships in the Ohio High School Athletic Association in 2000 and 2001.
LeBron James was the Fighting Irish teammate of Joyce, another Akron native who later became one of Dambrot’s young basketball students.
James and Joyce were close friends from childhood who always wanted to play basketball together. At St. Vincent-St. Mary, their dream came true.
Through his publicist, James claimed that Dru has always been a leader. He was always really meticulous and totally committed to the game and growing better, even when we were younger. He had a nasty streak and a burning desire, and it was one quality that made him a good player.
He would bring it every day, and it was something we were all drawn to. I’ve always respected him for not wasting a single day in not striving to get better.
After graduating from high school, James and Joyce split up. The former was selected first overall by Cleveland in the 2003 NBA Draught, while Joyce played college basketball at Akron under Dambrot, who was later named the Zips’ head coach.
By the time Joyce finished his undergraduate career in 2007, he had been named to two All-MAC teams and set a record for assists at Akron with 503 total. In 2019, Joyce joined Dambrot in being inducted into the Akron Zips Athletics Hall of Fame. Dambrot had a 13-year record of 305-139 and three MAC titles.
After graduating from college, Joyce began a 12-year playing career abroad that brought him to Germany, Poland, Russia, and France.
He retired in 2019 as the Basketball Bundesliga’s all-time leader in assists, having spent the majority of his ten seasons playing in Germany.
Joyce made a seamless move into coaching when his playing days were over, working as an assistant at Cleveland State from 2019 to 22.
Dennis Gates’ CSU Vikings won back-to-back Horizon League championships in 2021–2022 with Joyce on the coaching staff. Joyce has already established a close bond with the guards he trains because to his time spent working with Duquesne’s team.
