Robert Wagner was born on February 10, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan. He is the son of Robert John Wagner Sr. and Hazel Alvera (née Boe). His father worked as a salesman for Ford Motor Company. He grew up alongside his sister Mary. Robert Wagner is of Norwegian and German ancestry.

Wagner received his diploma from Saint Monica Catholic High School in 1949. Soon after finishing high school, he became interested in acting. However, before being discovered by Henry Wilson, Robert failed his first screen test. Wagner’s contract with 20thCentury Foxx was facilitated by Wilson.
