Dua Lipa Says Recent Breakup ‘Ending in a Nice Way’ Taught Her a ‘Lot’

Dua Lipa has “New Rules” when it comes to breakups.

The pop superstar, 28, opened at Rolling stoneFebruary’s cover story about a recent breakup and what she learned from the experience. In an interview published Tuesday, the Grammy winner explained that ending a relationship without any animosity “learns [her] a lots of.”

The artist of “Houdini” said that it was a “new” experience for her – and a pleasant one – to end the relationship on good terms. “I think I’ve had breaks in my life where I felt like the only kind of break you could have was when things ended really badly,” Lipa said. “Things ending nicely was such a new thing… It taught me a lot.”

The singer-songwriter opened up about how a healthy breakup she went through inspired one of her favorite songs on her upcoming album. Although the song’s title and release date have been kept under wraps, it’s said to be about feeling mature and healthy as the ex moves on.

On the song, the “Levitating” singer reportedly sings. “I must have loved you more than I ever knew… I’m not mad/I’m not hurt/You got everything you deserve.”

“When you have that feeling, it makes you feel really grown up because you’re like, ‘Oh, wow, I’m such an evolved human being that I can see my ex move on and feel good about it,'” Lipa said of the feelings explored in the new song.

While the pop star didn’t specifically reveal who helped craft the track for her upcoming third studio album, she did confirm to Rolling stone that she has been single since December 2023.

Recently, the British star was linked with French director Romain Gavras. The two first sparked dating rumors in February 2023 when they were spotted leaving a party together. A few months later, in May, they made their official red carpet debut as a couple at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Nostalgia for the future last summer, the artist shared tidbits about their relationship on social media, posting photos from their joint vacation and congratulating the 42-year-old director on his birthday on Instagram.

Following the release of her latest single “Houdini” in November 2023, Lipa opened up to Audacy’s interview Application podcast about how the song was inspired by the “fun parts” of being single.

“A lot of people want to take their solitude to find someone else, but I think the whole point of spending that time alone is to really figure out what you need, and who you are in silence, and who you are without someone,” the artist said. “That’s the best part, and then of course just enjoy your girl time or whatever.”
