Love is blindAlexa and Brennon Lemieux are going to be parents!

The couple, who met and married on the third season of the Netflix hit, are expecting their first baby together, PEOPLE exclusively reports.

“We wanted this to happen and so we’re just grateful to be here,” says Alexa, 29, who is due to give birth in the summer. “It was such a big part of my life [and] I’m the worst secret keeper…so I’m ready for it to be out there!”

“I just love looking in the mirror, because I remember not being pregnant and looking in the mirror [thinking], ‘Oh, I can’t wait for something to be there,'” she continues. “Now there is, and I love it! I just put my hands on my stomach and just rub it all the time. I’m obsessed.”

Brennon, 33, adds: “Everybody always says the same thing… which is when you least expect something to happen, it will. That was the case when we met. I stopped going out, seeing people. She stopped, and we just met on the show so it was serendipitous. The same thing with this, which is you don’t really expect something to happen and it does. So it’s always good.”

Alexa and Brennon found out the happy news at the end of November, but they say their journey to that point was not an easy one.

“We tried for almost a year and a half, so it was a lot. I went through some fertility treatments and nothing worked,” explains Alexa. “I was very nervous that we might never be able to have children.”

“For me personally, and I don’t look at women this way, but I was put on this earth to be a mom,” she continues. “Even as a child, [I would be asked], ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ And people are like, I want to be a princess or an astronaut or whatever. I thought, ‘I want to be a mom.’ That’s all I ever wanted to be.”

“And so, it was a very difficult period for me. I was really going through it because it’s like I can’t do the one thing that I feel like I was put on this earth to do,” she admits. “And to me, it strips you of your femininity. That’s what it felt like. And it felt like I was broken.”

While “going through all these emotions,” Alexa says she even asked Brennon, “Did you wish you were married to someone else who could give you a child?”

“He says, ‘Alexa, what’s going to happen will happen. I love you no matter what.’ … it’s a lot. It’s a lot to process and a lot to go through,” shares Alexa.

So when the two got pregnant naturally — right before they planned to make an IVF appointment — Alexa had a hard time believing it.

“I stopped drinking, cut out caffeine. I did all the warming foods and acupuncture twice a week. I did everything I could,” she explains. “Then come November, I thought, it’s the holidays and I just want to rest. I’m sick of it. It’s all the time and I have to think about this all the time… And it worked.”

“When I found out, I definitely didn’t think I was one bit [pregnant]”, Alexa recalls. “I took some [tests] and it was positive and I was just telling him when it came positive, I said, ‘My body is working, my body is working!'”

As for Brennon, he was also shocked and recalls that Alexa came out with a test that had a “very, very faint line.”

“I said, ‘I don’t know if this is real. Let’s take another test.’ And she looked at me and said, ‘This is the sixth test,'” he notes. “It’s been a long journey and we’ve been trying for so long … there’s so much emotion all the time. I’m trying to stay calm about a lot of things, so I said, ‘Let’s wait, let’s go get an official opinion that actually confirms we’re pregnant.'”

In the time since that day, Alexa has been dealing with first trimester symptoms. “For the first six weeks I was exhausted, I mean, I slept probably 20 hours a day,” she recalls. “I also got pneumonia during that. Between the pneumonia and the sickness and the pregnancy sickness, it was a lot.”

Things have calmed down since then, although he is currently dealing with “nausea all the time and a lot of heartburn”. She also craved spicy Mexican food, which Alexa jokes “doesn’t help with heartburn.”

As she prepares to enter her second trimester, Alexa says she’s taking her pregnancy “day by day” but is excited to “wear anything that fits and shows off [the bump] unplug and play with new styles.”

“Every week has just been a milestone and I feel like I’m just ticking the box. Alright. I made it this far… And she kept going for sonograms,” she says. “With everything I’m going through, I feel like I’m so grateful to be pregnant. Even when I throw up, I say, ‘I wanted this. This is great. I’m so happy to be here.’ I’m just rolling with the punches. And I think it’s because it’s been such a long journey to get here that I appreciate having symptoms and going through them.”

“[Even] my body is changing, I feel like that’s what I’m here for. Destroy my body. Do whatever you have to do… I know so many women who say, ‘Oh, I have stretch marks and I don’t want to see me gain weight.’ And I just say, ‘Do it. I’m so blessed,'” she adds. “To be on the other side of that, it’s quite a journey. I am sending baby dust to everyone who is still on the way and I pray that everyone gets their baby.”

The couple say they have found out the baby’s gender and plan to tell their “excited” family members in the coming weeks when they host a gender reveal party.

“We found out as soon as I was 10 weeks. I was there to have my blood drawn,” explains Alexa. “But we’re waiting to share it all…we had a nice moment with the two of us finding out, and then we’ll share it with everyone else next week.”

They also can’t help but gush about what they’re most excited about when the baby arrives.

“Getting rip sticks again or some new skateboards,” jokes Brennon. “Find someone to take to the boot store. Ooh, and the kids’ rodeo. I’m excited about that.”

Alexa says, “I’m so excited to see who she’s going to look like, to see our combination, I think it’s going to be so interesting. And I’m excited to see family and friends. I feel like marriage is one thing… But once you have something that’s a physical combination of your love, it’s just such a fun thing. And seeing everyone interact with our child is going to be super exciting.”

“I feel like it’s just the next chapter for us. It’s been good timing. We’re looking for a house right now, so it’s also very different looking at everything now, like where the nursery is going to be and the yard,” she notes, as Brennon chimes in: ” Every day is another roller coaster. Because you try to plan things for the future. And now I just think yes [I’m] looking at the plans differently. Not daily plans, but different plans for the future.”

Above all? “I’m so excited for the day when our child asks, ‘How did you meet?'” says Alexa. “It’s like, ‘Do you have 10 o’clock? Sit down, let’s watch a few episodes.'”

“It would be really funny if that happened,” adds Brennon. – I would laugh!
