Eddie Redmayne Recalls His 'Trial and Error Experience' of Using Prosthetics on The Day of the Jackal: 'Sweat Oozing Out'

Eddie Redmayne doesn’t hide his thoughts on wearing prosthetics.

In an interview with Diversity which was released on Friday, November 8, the Oscar winner, 42, went into graphic detail about wearing the special effects makeup used to transform his character into Day of the Jackala modern retelling of the classic 1973 film.

In the first episode of the thriller series Peacock, Redmayne disguises himself as “an elderly German cleaner”.

“My overwhelming memory of those days was Richard coming in and poking at the prosthesis and this sweat dripping off the top,” Redmayne told the publication.

“You don’t have a lot of prep time with them because they cost so much money and take so long to put on,” Fantastic beasts added the actor. “And they’re so uncomfortable that people often say, ‘Oh, it’s a prosthetic performance.’ ”

“But I’ve experienced a lot of it myself, when I watch someone like Colin Farrell’s performance [in The Penguin] or Gary Oldman’s performance [in The Darkest Hour]you don’t have much time to prepare in it. So it’s really a trial and error experience.”

An important part of creating a believable prosthetic, Redmayne added, is creating a voice that fits. IN Day of the JackalRedmayne spoke German as an elderly carer while under layers of makeup.

“You can have beautiful prosthetics, but if it doesn’t match the voice, then you’re screwed,” he said. “Once you’ve prepared the German language, then you have to give it up to marry the fact that this guy is a 70-year-old smoker.”
