Ellen Ochoa News

Ellen Ochoa was the first woman from Latin America to enter space thirty years ago. She visited her alma institution on Friday for a renaming ceremony that was attended by many individuals, including the president of the university.

The Ellen Ochoa Pavilion is now the name of San Diego State University’s West Commons shopping centre. “Just as others have inspired me, I hope this building will serve to inspire a generation of Aztecs to reach for the stars,” Ochoa said.

Ellen Ochoa, who was born and raised in La Mesa, graduated from SDSU with a bachelor’s in physics in 1980. Ochoa oversaw the NASA mission as the Johnson Space Center’s director for many years.

However, she quickly rose to the position of astronaut and, 30 years ago, conducted her maiden mission on the space shuttle Discovery. Three other space missions would follow.

“It was amazing to see the world from space. I had the opportunity to fly over San Diego Harbour, which is really distinctive, Ochoa stated.

“On my first two flights, we were looking at the ozone hole and ozone depletion problem and the earth’s atmosphere,” she remarked. “On my third and fourth flights, we contributed to the construction of the international space station,” the pilot added.

Ochoa’s college career at SDSU has many twists and turns. She says she switched her major five times before settling on physics. She then earned a doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford.

Ochoa participated in the music programme all during her time in college. Ochoa very probably holds the record for being the first astronaut to play the flute in space, according to SDSU president Adela de la Torre, who spoke at the ceremony.

Yes, she was a physicist and an astronaut, but de la Torre also noted that she was a musician. And it is very crucial to comprehend because we need to accept all aspects of who we are in order to extend our perspectives.

Currently retired, Ochoa. But she claims that she is still enthusiastic about NASA’s efforts, particularly the prospects for a second moon landing.

The Artemis programme, according to Ochoa, involves sending people to the moon first and then learning what it will take to travel to Mars later.

Three of Ochoa’s siblings also earned degrees from SDSU, she added. According to her, her mother attended school there for almost 20 years until graduating two years later than her daughter.
