Elton John Joins the EGOT Club While Picking Up First-Ever Emmy for Farewell Show

John won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Special for his Disney+ special ‘Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger’s Stadium’

Elton John has now been inducted into the EGOT Hall of Fame.

The Rocket Man singer, 76, won an Emmy for Outstanding Live Music Special Elton John Live: Goodbye to Dodger’s Stadiumadding him to the short list of celebrities who have earned Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

Amy Poehler, who presented the award, hinted at his new status in her introduction to his nomination, saying, “I can’t speak for Elton now, but ‘EGOT’ to be excited about it.”

John did not attend the event to accept the award, but the producers of the special went upstairs to accept the award on his behalf, saying he “sent his love and thanks” to the voters.

“We knew this performance would be historic as it would be Elton’s last North American performance on tour. We knew it would be historic because it was Disney’s first live global broadcast,” said one of the producers while accepting John’s Emmy on stage. “We didn’t know it would be historic because it would capture the man who created the soundtrack for all of our lives. He has done so much good for society – who are all our heroes. We didn’t know it would get him an EGOT.”

In a separate news release following his win, John — now the 19th person ever to win the coveted four awards — added: “I’m incredibly humbled to be joining an incredibly talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this point has been filled with passion, dedication and unwavering support from my fans around the world.”

“Tonight is a testament to the power of art and the joy it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful,” he said.

Elton John Live: Goodbye to Dodger’s Stadium, which debuted on Disney+, received three Emmy nominations. The singer recorded the special on November 20, 2022 as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. Documentary under the title Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The last performances of Elton John and the years that made him a legend was also published alongside it.

“There are no more superlatives to describe Elton John and his impact on music and culture – he is simply unmatched,” said Bob Chapek, CEO of The Walt Disney Company. He also highlighted John’s long association with the company, having composed the music for the 1994 album. John’s performance at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in November was his third appearance at the venue and marked his 2000th concert in the US. He also performed in Los Angeles, San Diego, Tacoma, Washington and Santa Clara, California.

“This year will be my grand finale in North America, playing stadiums all over the country, with the most spectacular production I’ve ever had,” he said during the tour. “Thank you for sharing this journey with me. I cherish these memories we’re making together. It’s been amazing and I look forward to seeing you very soon one last time, on my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.”

As for what’s next for the longtime singer, he announced in November that he and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin had just finished a new album.

“We just finished the album in Los Angeles, which is going to surprise you a lot,” John told the audience in fan-filmed footage of the event. “It’s absolutely beautiful, and it’s full of youth, and it’s full of vitality,” John said of his upcoming album. “This is a wonderful place after being together for 56 years.”
