Emily Ann Roberts Is Touring with Blake Shelton, Singing with Vince Gill — and Dreaming of Her Garden (Exclusive)

Emily Ann Roberts seems like the type to have a garden.

“Last year’s garden he was not the most successful garden yet,” admits Roberts, 25, during an interview with PEOPLE about his latest obsession. “We were first-timers. We got some things and ate them, so I would say It is success.” She laughs and adds: “It will be better this year!”

The garden is just one of many new parts of the authentic country music artist’s life from Knoxville, Tennessee, as she continues to make a new home in Nashville with her husband of three years, Chris Sasser.

“We just bought our first house about a year ago and we’re slowly building it together,” says the songbird, who burst onto the scene in 2015 as the runner-up on Season 9 of the NBC series. Vote. “We’re painting the walls and wallpapering some rooms and decorating them. We’re just making memories that I know will last a lifetime, and that keeps me so tight.”

Staying grounded will certainly be the goal this year, as Roberts appears to be on the cusp of possibly the biggest year of his career thus far. Having released his brilliant debut album I can’t hide the country back in September, the spitfire of country music is getting ready to hit the road with his ex Vote coach Blake Shelton on his Back to Honky Tonk Tour in February.

“For years I tried to fit into a mold,” explains Roberts, who recently released an acoustic video for her beautiful song “Devil Wears Denim.” “I was not satisfied with that. So it’s so good that things are happening now that I’m really proud of.”

Really, I can’t hide the country is a comprehensive album that finds a way to show every side of the dazzling prism that is Emily Ann Roberts.

“There were times when I was looking for reasons to believe and I wondered if there were people out there looking for an artist like me,” admits Roberts, who joins the legendary Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill on her song “Still Looking.” “Is there anyone out there who will believe what I have to say and what I want to bring to the table?”

And the answer to that question is yes.

“We can tell crazy stories and we can stop and laugh, we can be sarcastic and act like fools sometimes,” says Roberts. “And I think that’s what makes country music so special. It seems like there’s room for all of that. It’s real. People want to hear about real life.”

And she does it with a lot of humor infused within her songs.

“People ask me where I get my humor from,” laughs Roberts, whose new album includes the witty “He Set Her Off” and the sarcastic “Loves Me for My Heart.” “I think I just grew up in a family that likes to tell stories and make people laugh. And I probably exaggerate a lot and drag things out sometimes. It’s just part of who I am, and it comes through in my songwriting. And I think that’s important. Life doesn’t always have to be serious.”

But Roberts can also be serious, quiet and romantic, especially on songs like the sweet “Infinity.”

“I actually wrote that over four years ago,” she says of the beauty she co-wrote with fellow singer-songwriter Stephanie Chapman. “Even if I’m with you forever, it won’t be long enough to love you… that’s how this song came about.”

Roberts took a deep breath.

“When you have such great people in your life, even forever with them doesn’t seem long enough,” she says. “I feel truly blessed to have Chris. No matter how crazy life gets, when I walk through that door of our little house, it’s just me and him and he only loves me for me. If the whole music thing went away tomorrow, he would Don’t love me less. And having someone like that in your corner who has your back, no matter what, is a real treasure.”
