Kevin Costner Celebrates His 69th Birthday with Throwback Photo from His First Movie

Happy birthday, Kevin Costner!

Costner, who turns 69 on Thursday, shared a photo of himself from his 1981 film debut. Hot summer in Malibu, on Instagram as he marked his big day. The actor was in his mid-20s at the time of filming.

“Today we celebrate another year of life and take a moment to honor this kid who had big dreams. It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come,” Costner wrote in the caption of the post. “Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes. Thanks to your support I was able to make my dreams come true this year.”

Costner recently appeared at the 2024 Golden Globes on January 7, after being unable to attend the 2023 awards due to heavy rain storms and flooding in Los Angeles. Winner of the Golden Globe for 2023 Yellowstone presented this year’s award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series with America Ferrera and surprised the actress — and the audience — by reciting part of her Barbie monologue.

“You know, you have a scene that I really love. I think a lot of people really love that scene,” he said. “You know, ‘it’s literally impossible to be a woman.’ You know, ‘You’re so beautiful. You’re so smart and it’s killing me that you don’t think you’re good enough.’ That was pretty good.”

A startled Ferrera replied: “Kevin Costner, do you remember my soliloquy about femininity from Barbie?” to which Costner simply said, “No.”

Costner shared in an Instagram post in May 2023 that he hadn’t “felt this way about a movie since we shot Dances with Wolves,” referring to his Oscar-winning 1990 epic. In an interview with Deadline in June 2023, he said he had been developing the series in various forms since 1988 and had encountered difficulty finding “anyone to make it.” Instead of that, he partially financed the project himself by taking out a mortgage on his 10-acre home in Santa Barbara, California, he revealed at the time.

Costner told PEOPLE in November 2022 that his son Hayes, 14, who he shares with ex-wife Christine Baumgartner, would appear in the film. At the time, he jokingly said that the film’s “screenplay [has] been around longer than Hayes’ entire life.
