Emily Blunt and Chris Evans Star as Pharmaceutical Reps in ‘Pain Hustlers’ Trailer

Emily Blunt is making her way to the top in a hurry in her latest film.

On Wednesday, Netflix debuted the first trailer for Pain Hustlersstarring Blunt and Chris Evans as drug sales clerks pushing opioids in a story based on true events.

Blunt plays Lisa Drake, a single mother “at the end of her rope” after losing her job, according to the synopsis. “A chance encounter with pharmaceutical sales representative Pete Brenner (Evans) sets her on an upward trajectory economically but down a dubious ethical path as she becomes embroiled in a dangerous racketeering scheme.”

The film’s trailer teases Liza and Pete’s high-earning, hard-partying lifestyle while writing it on the title cards Pain Hustlers “can cause increased energy, elevated mood, ecstasy, paranoia, aggression [and] greed.”

As Liza deals with “her increasingly restless boss, her daughter’s deteriorating health, and a growing awareness of the devastation the company is causing,” she begins to question her career choices.

Netflix described the film as “a stark and revealing look at what some people do out of desperation and others out of greed.”

Written by Wells Tower, adapted from a 2018 article by Evan Hughes published in The New York Times Magazine and the next book Pain Hustlers: Crime and Punishment at an Opioid Startup. Netflix has secured worldwide distribution rights for the film at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

“Elements of the story are obviously consistent with what Evan Hughes documented in his book, but we created Liza Drake, we created the relationship she has with her daughter, Phoebe, just as a way to allow the audience to connect with one character and lead us through the story,” he added.

Along with Blunt and Evans, the film also stars Catherine O’Hara, Chloe Coleman, Jay Duplass, Brian d’Arcy James, Amit Shah, Aubrey Dollar, Willie Raysor and Andy Garcia.

Pain Hustlers is in select theaters on October 20th and streaming on Netflix on October 27th.
