Emily in Paris' Eugenio Franceschini Says Joining the Cast as Lily Collins’ New Love Interest Is an 'Unexpected Gift' (Exclusive)

Eugenio Franceschini opens up about what it was like to join Season 4 Emily in Paris.

In an interview with PEOPLE at the premiere of the second half of the new season in Rome, Franceschini expressed his gratitude for the hit Netflix series. He says that the role crept up on him while he was working on other projects, and now he just took it all in.

“It’s an unexpected gift for me, because everything happened very quickly,” he says. “When I was selected, I was filming a TV series here in Italy, so I didn’t have time to understand what was going on.”

“So I threw myself into something,” he adds.

Looking back on the season, Franceschini calls his time on the show “a great joy” and says he’s excited to see how the role unfolds in the future.

“My work depends on [standard of the] series and that’s the most important thing,” he says.

When it comes to the cast connection, Franceschini — who plays Lily Collins’ title character, Emily’s lover Marcello — says working so closely with the actress fostered a friendship between the two.

“I worked with Lily all the time, so, yes, she did [my closest friend]”, he continues.

As a native Italian who grew up in the northern region of Verona, he is also considering filming the series in the capital, Rome.

“The most famous places,” he recalls. “The Trevi Fountain at sunrise — I saw the Trevi Fountain completely empty for the first time in my life just for us. It was a big, big emotion.”

“I think it’s something I’ll keep in my mind and heart forever,” Franceschini concluded.

In the 1st part Emily in Paris In the fourth season, Emily explored her feelings for chef Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), and ended with him admitting that he loved her. Part Two now finds Emily in Rome — on the back of a Vespa with Franceschini’s Marcello.

“So now you’ve been with a Frenchman, a Briton and now an Italian? You’re really stamping your passport, huh?” Mindy (Ashley Park) teased Emily in the trailer.

“It’s not the first time you’ve mixed business with pleasure,” Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulie), Emily’s boss, later tells Emily, “You’re actually pretty good at it.”

According to Netflix’s official synopsis for the season finale, “the chemistry between Emily and Gabriel is undeniable as they work together to win a Michelin star [for his restaurant]but two big secrets threaten to undo everything they dreamed of. As old patterns collide with new complications, Emily finds herself drawn to a potential new love interest… and a new town.”

Emily in Paris Season 4, Part 1 is streaming now and Part 2 will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, September 12th.
