Emma Stone Beams as Reporter Calls Her Emily During Cannes Film Festival Conference: 'That's My Name!'

It’s not often that Emma Stone is called by her real name.

During a press conference at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 18, the actress, 35, beamed when a reporter called her by her birth name, Emily.

Stone smiled brightly when a reporter mentioned the name while asking her a question at a press conference for her upcoming film Kinds of kindness.

She then turned to the film’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, excitedly telling him, “That’s my name!”

Stone revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in April that she originally changed her real professional name to Emma years ago because another actress was already going by Emily Stone.

When asked if anyone in her life has ever called her by her birth name, Stone explained, “When I meet them, the people I work with do.”

“It is only because my name is taken [by another actress in SAG]. Then I went crazy a few years ago,” she continued. “For some reason, I said, ‘I can’t take it anymore. Just call me Emily.’ ”

Although Stone said she doesn’t mind being called Emma or Emily, she noted that she prefers to use her real name. “That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily,” she said.

The actress said during the conference that she is now “extremely comfortable” working with the film’s director Lantihimos, 50. (They will team up again with Plemons, 36, for the upcoming film Bugoniawhich, according to the logline, follows two “conspiracy-obsessed young men” who “kidnap a powerful CEO of a major corporation, convinced she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.”)

“I feel like I can do anything with him because we’ve worked together so many times. I trust him more than I’ve ever trusted any director,” Stone said. “… We just have something that I can’t explain, and I’m very grateful for that.”

Stone also said that as much as Lanthimos has mentioned her as his muse over the years, she also sees him as her own.

“I think he is my muse. We established that a long time ago,” she said. “I met him about 10 years ago… We had such a great time working together Beloved, i I am drawn to his stories. I am drawn to his films. I’m drawn to his way of looking at the world and the characters and the way he does it all.”

“So it was just angry. I think we both feel that way. We are working. We also have similar taste – who knew,” she added.

Kinds of kindness will be published on June 21.
