More than 13 years after Emma Stone made it Saturday night live hosting debut, Curse the actress joined one of the most exclusive clubs in the history of television — that of the elite “Five-Timers Club”.
On Dec. 2, Stone took the helm of the long-running sketch comedy series for the fifth time, starting with a few special guest cameos and introducing that coveted club jacket.
On Saturday night, Stone was all smiles as she stepped onto the SNL stage at 30 Rock, saying she was honored to be the latest member of the club to celebrate hosting the show five times, now in its 49th season. As soon as she started speaking, Tina Fey joined her, welcoming her to the club.
“At 35, you are officially the youngest member. I’m the second youngest at 53,” she said, although that’s not a title Fey holds. That honor would go to Scarlett Johansson at 39, Drew Barrymore at 48 and Melissa McCarthy at 53.
“A few years ago, they even added an entire women’s department. It was actually Candice Bergen’s idea.” Bergen also joined them. She told Stone the club had everything, including showers, a changing room and “a big portrait with the eyes cut out so Martin Short could peek in.”
Bergen, 77, joked that the women’s section started out as a “little quiet place to cry” but over the years became “a big luxurious place to cry”. Now, Stone was a part SNL history or, as Bergen said, SNL HER story. And that also meant that coveted velvet, purple and black Five Timers Club service jacket. Fey got one from the side and pushed it to Stone, who wore a grin from ear to ear with it.

“This is amazing,” she beamed. “Honestly, this is my dream since childhood. And it means a lot to me that I can share this moment with you. So thank you.” As she reached into her pockets, she felt something inside.
“Is this a joint?” she asked, taking out a, well, joint.
“Oh, that has to be Woody Harrelson’s jacket,” Bergen said.
Stone reached further and pulled out something else. “There’s also a vaccine card here.”
“Oh, then it is definitely not Woody’s,” Fey replied.

The actress, who met her husband Dave McCary on the set of an episode SNL in 2016, first hosting in October 2010. Her second gig was in 2011, followed by a 2016 run that led to her romance with comedy writer McCary, and then, most recently, in 2019.
Ahead of this week’s episode, Stone appeared in a fun teaser alongside musical guest Noah Kahan and cast member Sarah Sherman. Previously, in a separate, solo video, Stone starred in a black-and-white film under the spotlight on the Studio 8H stage.
“What’s the secret of comedy?” she asked into the microphone. After waiting just a few beats too long, Stone said, “Timing.”
The “Five-Timers Club” has some pretty notable members, besides Stone. Hosted by Steve Martin Saturday night live 16 times, for example, while Tom Hanks hosted 10 times. Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck and Melissa McCarthy have also headlined the show five times.
