After their team’s heroic run, England fans congregated in the arrivals hall at Heathrow Terminal 3 in anticipation of getting to see their favourite players.

But they were left disappointed, when the Lionesses were shepherded out of Heathrow through a side exit.

Asked if the players had a say in the decision during an appearance on This Morning, Stanway revealed: “It all happens around us.

“I had no idea until afterwards when we got back on the coach and there was a few tweets out saying they were disappointed.

“That’s hard for us because we want to give back to the fans as much as possible.

“But I guess the FA have got a job to look after us and after that flight they probably just wanted to get us out of the back door and get our heads down as quick as possible.

“But yeah, we want the opportunity to be able to connect with fans so we’ll do that on social media.

“We’ve got another camp in three-four weeks’ time.”

She then added that there would be “an opportunity to see fans there”.

Many supporters woke up at the crack of dawn to try to get a glimpse of their heroes.

Some travelled from all over, with one couple driving from Colchester in the early hours and a mother and daughter making the early trip from Coventry.

Others forked out £80 to park at the airport overnight hoping to show their love and support for the Lionesses.

One held a homemade sign reading: “Thank you so much for inspiring me and the nation.”

A second said: “Lionesses! You have inspired me to play what I love! Football! All of you played amazing! Welcome home!”

An FA spokesperson stressed that the Lionesses followed the “normal protocol” also adhered to by the England men’s team – and that it would have been the same even if they had won the World Cup.

FA chiefs are also understood to have asked Heathrow staff to let fans know that players would not be going through arrivals, to try to avoid disappointment.

SunSport understands that there are currently no events planned to celebrate the Lionesses’ run.
