Enver Solomon, an expert in juvenile justice and adolescent development, has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Refugee Council.
Solomon, who previously worked for the nonprofit youth organization Just for Kids Law, will assume the role in December 2020. He has also held senior executive positions at Barnardos, The Children’s Society and the National Children’s Office.
He has also worked in the field of justice, working at the Foundation for Prison Reform and the Center for Crime and Justice Studies. In his place comes Maurice Wren, who worked for eight years for an organization that defends the rights of refugees.
“I am honored to take over as the new Executive Director of the Refugee Council, a national institution that provides vital services to refugees and asylum seekers, including unaccompanied children and youth,” Solomon said.
“The UK has a distinguished record of providing protection to those fleeing conflict, persecution and human rights abuses. There has never been a more challenging or interesting time to join the Refugee Council as we approach the 70th anniversary of the UN Refugee Convention next year.
“I am looking forward to working with all of the organization’s partners and supporters to reshape and influence the public discourse on refugees and ensure that their voices are at the center of it,” the speaker said.
Solomon has also served on advisory boards for the Children’s Commissioner’s Office, HM Inspector of Prisons and the Department of Education throughout his career. The Campaign to End Child Poverty, the Juvenile Justice Standing Committee, and the Board of Trustees for Asylum Aid were among the organizations in which he held leadership positions. Andrew Halper, Chairman of the Refugee Council Commissioner, continued: “Enver is a leader who is strongly committed to the poor.
The Refugee Council and the sector will be strengthened in the coming years by his experience in the broader humanitarian and legal dimensions of refugee and asylum matters, as well as his leadership in justice and youth matters.
