Every Tip You Need to Get a Festive Red Lip Like Christie Brinkley, Janelle Monáe, Kelsea Ballerini and More

It’s the most glamorous time of the year and nothing gets us into the holiday spirit more than red lips.

The look gives off “let’s party” vibes as soon as you walk past it. But let’s face it, red lipstick can also be demanding to maintain. (It transfers, migrates, fades, we know.) That’s where these makeup artists come in.

Kelsey Deenihan Fisher, Valeria Ferreira, Keita Moore, Tim Quinn, and Mary Wiles create looks for Hollywood’s A-listers, and each of them is a pro behind a recent red carpet red lip that, well, has us reaching for all their tips and tricks .

Ahead, all the scoop on Kelsea Ballerini, Christie Brinkley, Janelle Monáe, Naomi Watts and Rachel Zegler’s recent red lips, plus every secret you need to get a similar festive look at home.

Star: Christie Brinkley.

Professional: Make-up artist Tim Quinn.

Inspo: When Christie showed me the clip that opened the Hero Dog Awards – a highlight of her iconic appearance in National Lampoon’s Vacation — she was driving the red Ferrari. I immediately went through my lip color arsenal to create this bright holiday red.

The Iip: Charlotte Tilbury KISSING in So Red. This is definitely a red you’ll notice when you wear it — it’s bold, brilliant, and classic, and I think people appreciate classic more than ever! It’s a joyful color that evokes a level of comfort, familiarity and nostalgia during the holidays.

Tips: My secret to wearing red or any bold shade is to moisturize my lips well. I use Halo42 eye oil to do this. Instantly revitalizes the lips, smoothes them and gives them shine, just like the area around the eyes. Apply it while using tanning products.

When you’re ready to apply your lips, wipe them off, then line your lips with red lip liner, followed by a layer of lipstick. Blot, then add another layer of lipstick for depth and longer wear.

Naomi Watts

Star: Naomi Watts.

Professional: Makeup artist Mary Wiles.

Inspo: Naomi’s gorgeous black Carolina Herrera dress. We wanted to add a pop of color and match the drama.

Lips: Lisa Eldridge Velvet Ribbon True Velvet Lip Colour. It’s a classic, true red with a blue undertone. It’s the perfect red lip color for the holiday season because it’s bright and screams fun, fun, fun!

Tips: Use a lip scrub to make sure there is no dry skin on your lips. If there is, the pigment will seize and it will be difficult to achieve a good finish.

Then, moisturize your lips well with a mask (Tatcha’s The Kissu Lip Mask is my favorite) an hour before applying lipstick.

Use a lip primer to prevent feathering.

Go for a lipstick that is matte or almost matte because it has the densest pigment that will help it stay in place longer.

Star: Janelle Monáe.

Professional: Make-up artist Keita Moore.

Inspo: Janelle’s red lip look was inspired by classic Hollywood glamour. Its depth and intensity made it an excellent choice for what we wanted — a touch of timeless elegance.

Lips: Maybelline New York Superstay Matte Ink Lipstick in Exhilarator. It’s a really pretty red that has a jewel tone to it. During the season, wearing a red lip is a festive touch that adds joy to the holiday spirit.

Tips: Moisturize and prep your lips first to create a smooth base.

Then line your lips with a lip liner in a shade that matches your lipstick.

Then apply the lipstick and wait for it to dry before gently blotting it with a thin tissue.

Apply some setting powder or you can use a red eyeshadow to set the color.

KELSEA BALLERINI

Star: Kelsea Ballerini.

Professional: Makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan Fisher.

Inspo: For this red lip look, we wanted to give a nod to old Hollywood glam but add a little twist with a pink shade in the middle. Both colors are inspired by her dress; the classic red came from the silhouette and the pink from the beautiful shade.

Lips: CoverGirl Exhibitionist Crème Lipstick in 305 Hot. It’s a brilliant red that pairs beautifully with pink. We love using this lipstick because it’s super hydrating and lasts all night.

For the pink in the center, we wanted a shade that complimented the red lips and pink of the dress, but was a bold color. CoverGirl Exhibitionist Ultra Matte Lipstick in 665 Wink Wink was the perfect choice not only because of the shade, but it’s transfer-proof, lightweight, and won’t crack or crease.

I think any colorful color, especially red, is a fun and festive way to celebrate this time of year. It always reminds me of the holiday lights and glow of the season.

Tips: Matte lip colors will always last longer than a satin or glossy finish. I’ll often apply one coat of lipstick, then use a brush to apply translucent powder on top, then another coat. The powder absorbs all the excess oil and acts as a holder for the top coat.

Star: Rachel Zegler.

Professional: Make-up artist Valeria Ferreira.

Inspo: the decadence of her dress and the rose petal on the bottom of the dress. It made me think of the velvety feel of rose petals.

Lips: I concocted this lip formula myself and added loose powder over it to enhance the matte finish. Rouge Dior Forever Liquid in Forever Shock was the main component of my mix. This shade is Malbec red—rich, full-bodied, and extravagant.

Skin gets lighter in winter and the sun sets earlier, we need more color and contrast to counteract all these factors. This red lip ticks all the boxes and will definitely make an impression.

Tips: Before applying, exfoliate your lips to get rid of dryness.

Do not use lip balm before applying this type of lipstick as it will change the matte look.

Apply a little product to the edges of your mouth, then press your lips together to create a guideline to follow.

Fill in the lips little by little and always leaving the center of the mouth a little lighter.

Powdering your lips and reapplying will build up layers of pigment and this will give you the 24 hour wear we all want.

Always carry a metal straw in your purse! This will help keep the edge of your lipstick intact.
