Everything to Know About 'Challengers' Starring Zendaya

Between throwing a spider web and swinging a tennis racket, is there anything Zendaya can’t do?

The Spider-Man: No Way Home star is stepping into another action-packed role, but this time he’s putting his athleticism to the test in a tennis-centric game Challengers movie.

First announced in February 2022, the Zendaya-led film follows a professional tennis player named Tashi who finds herself embroiled in a love triangle with her current husband and ex-boyfriend. Meanwhile, her past and present lovers have history – and rivalry – on the court.

While many plot details are kept under wraps, the official Challengers the synopsis suggests that the romantic sports comedy will not be lacking in competition, drama and love. Zendaya also worked hard for it, training diligently with a professional tennis coach.

The Emmy-winning actress reunited with Amy Pascal, who worked on Spider-Man: No Way Home, on the film, which he worked as a producer alongside executive producers Bernard Bellew and Kevin Ulrich.

Challengers is billed as a romantic sports comedy that explores an intense love triangle between a professional tennis player and former tennis rivals. Competition – and drama – ensues both on and off the field as their past and present collide.

According to the film’s official synopsis, Challengers follows “three players who knew each other when they were teenagers as they compete in a tennis tournament to become world-famous grand slam winners and rekindle old rivalries on and off the court.”

Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) is the player at the center of it all, a former tennis prodigy turned coach who is an inexorable force of nature in sports and in the game of love. She’s married to a champion on a losing streak, who must compete against a washed-up player who also happens to be his ex-best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend.

Who directed Challengers?

Challengers directed by Luca Guadagnino. It is best known for being the 2017 Call me by your name starring Timothée Chalamet. The coming-of-age drama received four Oscar nominations, winning in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

In October 2022, Guadagnino spoke of Zendaya’s ability to adapt as an actress, particularly raving about her tennis skills, which she learned for her role in Challengers. “She’s wonderful,” Guadagnino said Diversity at the gala academy of the museum in 2022.

“I mean, wow. We edited the film and hardly used any of her doubles. She’s so good,” he continued. “They spent about three months working hard,” Guadagnino said of his leads in the film. “Everybody — technical, athletic.”

Challengers aside, Guadagnino’s latest project, Bones and all, saw his return with Chalamet. The actor, along with Taylor Russell, starred in the cannibal love story that premiered in November 2022. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis.

Chalamet, who starred opposite Zendaya in Dunehe is also delighted with the performance of his former star in the Challengers. Not wanting to reveal too much, he said Diversity that he “loved”. He also talked about the bond he has not only working alongside Zendaya, but Guadagnino as well.

“She’s really become a sister. I’m so grateful to be able to count her as a partner, a sister and a friend,” he said of Zendaya. “And also to share stories about how amazing it is to work with Luca, because we’ve worked with him back-to-back on very different projects.”

Guadagnino’s “first comedy”, Challengers not based on a true story. Speaking to IndieWire at the Provincetown Film Festival in October 2022, he described the fictional tennis story as “a beautiful complex.” He also called it “a pretty fizzy, sexy movie about the world of tennis.”

“I think those three characters in that movie are beautifully put together and really resonated with people that I love very much,” Guadagnino told the paper. “And a sports movie, why not? It’s hyperkinetic, and I make movies, so it’s great.”

But while Challengers not based on a true story, the athleticism in the film is very real. Guadagnino said Diversity that Zendaya trained for three months with professional tennis coach and former player Brad Gilbert (who also served as a consultant on the film.)

The first official trailer for Challengers was released on June 20, 2023. The clip gave viewers an eagerly awaited look at Zendaya in the romantic sports comedy.

A second trailer was released in February 2024. Zendaya’s boyfriend, Tom Holland, showed his support for his girlfriend by posting the clip to his Instagram Story and tagging her along with the sweet caption.

“You’re not ready for this!” he wrote.
