According to reports, an assassination attempt has been made on the deposed Syrian tyrant Bashar al-Assad

But the online account General SVR – allegedly run by a former top spy in Russia – says he fell ill on Sunday.

It claims Assad, 59, sought medical attention and then almost immediately began “violently coughing and choking”.

The source said: “There is every reason to believe that an assassination attempt was made.”

Assad was said to be receiving treatment at his apartment and his condition was said to have stabilized on Monday.

Tests showed that he had poison in his body.

No sources were cited and there was no confirmation from Russia.

Last month it was revealed that al-Assad’s wife Asma was effectively banned from returning to the UK.

The 49-year-old – who was born in London – will not be able to return home as her passport has expired.

Asma, her tyrant husband and their family are currently living in exile in Moscow.

The couple fled Syria’s disintegration as Assad’s two decades in power were wiped out in a matter of days by rampaging rebels.

Russian despot Vladimir Putin – a friend of the family – offered them refuge as they desperately fled the Middle East.

But since their exile, reports have emerged that Asma wants to return to the UK – and may even be seeking a divorce.
