FANS have slammed HMRC over Luke Littler’s “brutal” tweet – as it was revealed the 16-year-old ace will lose £83,000 of his winnings to the taxman.

He won the £200,000 runner-up prize – but will now lose at least 45% of that to tax.

HMRC’s press office appears to have confirmed the reports of huge taxes on Twitter.

It read: “Huge congratulations to Luke on his fantastic run to the final.

“We can confirm the existence of income tax.”

Littler’s fans blasted the “brutal” Tweet from HMRC’s official press office account.

One said: “HMRC don’t need sarcasm, thanks. That’s a terrible look for you.”

Another said: “Nothing funny about this Tweet. Inappropriate.”

A third said: “I find HMRC to be a rather unpleasant, condescending answer – although it may be technically correct.”

Investment platform Saxo said Littler will have to forfeit £76,203 of his winnings to the tax authorities – as well as £7,330 of National Insurance.

Expert Andrew Mangion told Sky News: “Everyone has to pay tax, regardless of age.

“Those under 18 have the same personal deduction as adults.

“Kids usually don’t work – or if they do, their pay is generally below taxable compensation.

“In this case, it’s rare for a teenager to get that much money in one lump sum.

“We would advise him to seek professional financial advice on how best to proceed with this.”
