Career of Fatima Whitbread
Fatima started her career at an early age in school, winning the 1977 English secondary school championship in athletics. She was later selected for the CWG (Commonwealth Games) in 1978, where she finished sixth.
In 1979, Fatima won a gold medal at the European Junior Athletics Championships. Later, her career was hampered by a lingering shoulder injury, which she believed dated back to the 1986 world record throw.
The 1990 UK Athletics Championships were her last competition, where she suffered another shoulder injury and finally in 1992, Fatima officially retired from competition.
Fatima has appeared in a number of TV programs including “I’m a celebrity… Get me out of here!” in 2011. The Association of Sports Writers named Fatima Sportswoman of the Year in two consecutive years, 1986 and 1987.
Fatima was also voted BBC Sports Person of the Year in 1987 and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1987 Birthday Honors for services to athletics.
