Fawad Chaudhry is a Pakistani politician, lawyer and journalist for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He served as federal minister of information and broadcasting, overseeing media affairs. He previously served as Federal Minister for Science and Technology. He has been an active member of the National Assembly and plays a vital role in the party’s core committee. He also served as a special assistant to the federal cabinet, focusing on information, political affairs and policy implementation.

In the 2002 Pakistan General Elections, he ran for the Punjab Provincial Assembly as an independent candidate for the PP-25 constituency (Jhelum-II); however, he failed to secure the seat, garnering only 161 votes. The seat was won by Chaudhry Tasneem Nasir, a candidate from the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) (PML-Q), who polled 38,626 votes.
In 2008, he joined Pervez Musharraf’s political party, the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), and served as its media coordinator until 2012.
In March 2012, he joined the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). In April 2012, he became a member of the federal cabinet under Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani. He was appointed Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on information and political affairs. During this period he served as Minister of State. His tenure in the cabinet lasted until June 2012, when Prime Minister Gilani was disqualified, resulting in the dissolution of the federal cabinet.
In July 2012, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf became prime minister, and Chaudhry once again entered the federal cabinet. This time, he was appointed Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs. He held this position until the end of his term in March 2013.
In the 2013 Pakistan General Elections, he ran for the NA-63 (Jhelum-II) National Assembly seat as a candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-e-Azam Group (PML-Quaid); however, he failed to secure the seat, winning a total of 34,072 votes, defeated by Malik Iqbal Mehdi Khan.
In the same election, he also contested the Punjab Assembly as an independent candidate from PP-24 (Jhelum-I) constituency. He received only 82 votes and lost the seat to Raja Muhammad Awais Khan.
Join Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)
In June 2016, he became a member of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
He contested as a PTI candidate for the National Assembly seat in NA-63 constituency (Jhelum-II) in the by-elections held in August 2016; however, he did not win the seat. He received 74,819 votes and was defeated by Nawabzada Raja Matloob Mehdi in the election. In November 2016, he was appointed as the spokesperson of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). In March 2018, he was given the additional charge of PTI information secretary after Shafqat Mahmood resigned.
In June 2018, he was selected as a candidate for the 2018 Pakistan General Elections from NA-67 constituency (Jhelum-II); however, his nomination papers were rejected by the election tribunal after a petition was filed accusing him of non-payment of agricultural taxes . Chaudhry appealed to the Lahore High Court against the court’s decision, which allowed him to contest. He won from NA-67 constituency (Jhelum-II) in the 2018 general elections, polling 93,102 votes, defeating Nawabzada Raja representing the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) party. In the same election, he was also elected to the Punjab Assembly from PP-27 constituency (Jhelum-III) as a PTI candidate and received 67,003 votes, surpassing his opponent Nasir Maha from the PML-N party Maode. After being successfully elected to the National Assembly and the Provincial Assembly, Chaudhry expressed interest in becoming the Chief Minister of Punjab on a television talk show. He was appointed as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting on August 18, 2018, and served as the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting in the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Imran Khan two days later on August 20, 2018.
In April 2019, he was removed from the post of Federal Minister of Information and Broadcasting and appointed as Federal Minister of Science and Technology. In April 2021, he was reappointed as Federal Minister of Information and Broadcasting.

Launch of lunar observation website
As federal minister of science and technology, he launched Pakistan’s first official lunar observation website and calendar in May 2019. The website, titled “Pakistan Moon Sighting” and accessible through pakmoonsighting.pk, aims to end the controversy surrounding the recurring moon sighting phenomenon ahead of religious festivals. He sent the five-year Hijri calendar to the Islamic Ideology Council, which submitted it to the federal cabinet for review. Despite facing criticism from some religious groups, he expressed his belief that the traditional Rue Hilal Council was unnecessary.
Comments about India
He has often made controversial statements about India, including the Pulwama terror attack and the Chandrayaan-2 mission. After the Pulwama attack, he told the National Assembly of Pakistan that they had attacked India. He said,
Humne Hindustan ko ghus ke maara (We attacked them at home in India). Our success in Pulwama is the success of the people under the leadership of Imran Khan. You and we are both part of the success”
When opposition leaders protested, he clarified that they had attacked India after the Pulwama attack and said,
Pulwama ke waqiyeh ke baad, jab humne India ko ghus ke maara. ”
After the failure of the Chandrayaan-2 mission, he tweeted that India should not conduct such a mission and referred to “India” as “Endia”.

Arrested for inciting rebellion
He was arrested on January 25, 2023, on charges of threatening senior members of the Election Commission of Pakistan and their families and preventing them from performing their duties. Based on a complaint by ECP Secretary Omar Hamid Khan, Islamabad police registered an FIR against him under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code. Omar Hamid Khan alleged that Fawad Chaudhry used threatening language against the committee and its members.
Fawad Chaudhry was released on bail on February 1, 2023, on the condition that he not repeat any remarks inciting violence against constitutional institutions. Both the ECP and the prosecution opposed Fawad’s bail and requested the court to reject it.
Arrested for inciting violence
On May 9, 2023, Imran Khan was arrested by the police, followed by violent protests in the country by supporters of his party. Fawad was arrested by police under “maintenance of public order” regulations during the protest. On May 16, 2023, Islamabad High Court Judge Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb ordered Fawad’s release after he submitted an undertaking not to incite any violence. When he came out of the court, he noticed some police officers approaching him. He quickly got out of the SUV and ran into the court to avoid arrest. His political opponents laughed at his antics and made fun of him.
