First picture of ‘mystery man’ who booked Airbnb where missing teen Jay Slater spent his final hours before he vanished

A PICTURE has emerged of the man who booked the Airbnb Jay Slater went to hours before he disappeared in Tenerife.

Ayub Abdul paid £40 a night to rent a remote holiday home in the Rural de Teno park where Jay, 19, spent time with the two men before he disappeared.

Apprentice bricklayer Jay, who had been at the rave all night, went to Airbnb in the early hours of June 17th.

He shared his last Snapchat from the cottage holding a cigarette at 7.30am.

Jay then tried to get back to his holiday accommodation but after missing the bus he faced an 11 hour walk.

At around 8.50am he made one last frantic call to his friend Lucy, telling her he was lost in the “middle of nowhere” with no water and only one per cent of battery on his phone.

The two men Jay was with in the final hours before he disappeared spoke to police on the island before returning to the UK.

Spanish police described both as “irrelevant” to the investigation.

The first photo emerged as former Madeleine McCann investigator Mark Williams-Thomas broke news of his own investigation – sensationally claiming that Jay had admitted stealing a £12,000 Rolex watch before he disappeared.

The pair are believed to have met Jay, from Lancashire, during the three-day NRG festival in Playa de las Americas.

Now a video of Mr Abdul, who hired an Airbnb, has been released, which The Sun understands is from his Airbnb profile.

Mr Abdul booked Casa Abuela Tina in the village of Masca – which is about 18 miles from Playa de las Americas – on June 14 for three nights for £120, the Mail reports.

There is no implication of any wrongdoing on the part of Mr. Abdul.

Initial reports suggested Jay had met the men on the night he disappeared, before his close friend Brad Hargreaves claimed he had befriended them days before.

On Tuesday, two plainclothes police officers searched the Airbnb apartment again.

Detectives spent two hours combing the sea in the northwest of the island.

Last week, the owner of the Airbnb where the men stayed said she gave police all the information she had.

Ofelia Hernandez, who owns the holiday apartment, revealed that the couple who rented the accommodation were friendly, booked a few days at the cottage and spent a lot of time at the house.

She said she saw Jay walking uphill in a vast mountain area near Masca the morning he disappeared.

Ophelia told MEN: “It’s dangerous to walk here, it’s easy to get lost.

“He was walking along the road when I last saw him.

“He was alone. He walked normally, though he was fast.”

On Monday, a Spanish judge found that there was “no current evidence of criminality” in the case.

Some observers claimed that Jay could have been kidnapped or killed by a criminal group in the mountains.

But investigating judge Maria Goya, who is being briefed by the police on developments, the Civil Guard said there was nothing to suggest that Jay was the victim of a crime.

Mr Williams-Thomas – the investigative journalist who helped arrest Jimmy Savile – worked on the Jay case.

And today he released an eight-minute video in which he debunked the conspiracy theories and speculations spread by internet detectives.

He made some incredible new claims in the video – saying that Jay had confessed to stealing the Rolex to his friends on Snapchat.

Police were reviewing security cameras at the beach club and speaking with witnesses about the alleged theft of the Rolex in the hours before Jay went missing.

The ex-cop claims the family is aware of his investigation and believes Jay was “scared” when he left the Airbnb.

He said the teenager did not want to go back on holiday, despite having no water and a low battery on his phone.

Mark – who worked on the Madeleine McCann case – said Jay had spoken to at least three friends via text and phone on his way back, telling them he was lost.

Mark said in a video update today: “Two people told him to go back to the rental.

“He said he couldn’t do it and he had already been walking for 30 minutes and now he had turned off the road and was walking on a path where there were stones.”

It came after Jay’s heartbroken family said “words cannot describe the agony” after the search was suddenly called off on Sunday.

Mum Debbie Duncan said in a heartbreaking statement “we just want to find him” after the family vowed to keep looking.

Her emotional message read: “Jay is a normal lad who is in his third year as an apprentice and is a very popular young man with a large circle of friends.

“We are a very close family and we are completely devastated by his disappearance. Words cannot describe the pain and agony we are experiencing.

“He is our beautiful boy who has his whole life ahead of him and we just want to find him.

“We have no information on his whereabouts.”

Parents Debbie and Warren, as well as brother Zak, are all in Tenerife still looking for answers about what happened to Jay.

The others were “taken aback” by the speed with which the decision to end the search was made.

Police officers on the Spanish island have vowed to continue investigating the case if any major tips or information come in.
