Florence Pugh is talking again about the now infamous pink sheer dress she wore last year.
In a new interview in ELLEfor which she was also featured on the cover of the October issue of the magazine, the Oppenheimer The 27-year-old star spoke to actress Jodie Turner-Smith about her honest reaction to people scrutinizing her physical appearance.
“I talk about my body the way I do because I’m not trying to hide the cellulite on my thigh or the thorn between my arm and my breast: I’d rather put it all on display. I think the scariest cases for me are when people were upset that I showed ‘too much’ of myself.
“When it all went down with the Valentino pink dress a year ago, my nipples were visible through a piece of fabric, and that really upset people,” she continued in the interview. “People are afraid of freedom; the fact that I am comfortable and happy. Holding women back by commenting on their bodies has worked for a very long time. I think we’re in this swing right now where a lot of people are saying, ‘I don’t care.’
Florence Pugh opens up about accepting her body: ‘I don’t try to hide cellulite’
“Unfortunately, we’re so terrified of the human body that we can’t even look at my two sweet little nipples behind the fabric in a non-sexual way. We have to keep reminding everyone that there is more than one reason for women’s bodies [to exist].”
In July 2022, Pugh stepped out wearing a Barbie-pink dress at Valentino’s haute couture show in Rome. In an Instagram post that included a photo of herself wearing the dress, she wrote: “They’re technically covered?… Feeling magical in @maisonvalentino 🌸.”

In another Instagram post shortly after, she said she knew wearing the Valentino dress would cause a reaction, writing: “Whether it was negative or positive, we all knew what we were doing. I was excited to wear it, I didn’t blink from nervousness. I was neither before, during, nor after.
“What was interesting to watch and witness,” she continued, “is how easy it is for men to completely destroy a woman’s body, publicly, proudly, for all to see. Do you even do this with your job titles and business emails in your bio..?”
Towards the end of her post, Pugh wrote: “Grow up. Respect people. Respect the bodies. Respect all women. Respect people. Life will get a lot easier, I promise. And all because of two cute little nipples…”
The Little woman star also addressed the media to address the controversy, starting with an interview with Harper’s Bazaar‘s August 2022 Icon Issue. “I was comfortable with my small breasts,” she told the magazine. “And to portray them like that – it made it worse [people] that I was comfortable.”
And in an interview earlier this year for Voguewinter edition, she looked defiant to the observer. “I’ve never been afraid of what’s under the fabric,” Pugh said. “If I’m happy in it, then I’ll wear it. Of course, I don’t want to offend people, but I guess what I’m trying to say is: How can my nipples offend you so much?
