Florence Pugh talks about why she decided to shave her head for her new film, We live in time.

Talking to Vanity Fair in an interview published on Thursday, September 5, the 28-year-old actress explained why she decided to shave her head to embrace her role as Almut, a chef who at one point in the story is diagnosed with cancer and undergoes treatment.

According to the article, director John Crowley told Pugh that wigs and other hairpieces were options — but she was adamant about fully committing to her character’s real-life transformation journey.

“I just stopped him in mid-sentence and said, ‘John, nobody can play a character like this in a movie like this without doing what’s necessary,'” she said. “And if you don’t want to do that, I believe you shouldn’t be doing this kind of story.”

Pugh debuted her hairstyle at the 2023 Met Gala, and her clean-shaven head, which she accessorized with a towering headdress, was the subject of commentary online.

“I think there was some weird rumor going around on the Internet that I did it to reclaim my identity,” Pugh recalled of the reading, though she had never in her “entire life” claimed any such statement.

In July of that year, Oppenheimer said the star Radio Times (according to Daily Mail) that she “dropped the vanity” when it came to her hairstyle.

“Hollywood is very glamorous — especially for women — and it’s hard for audiences to see past that,” Pugh said. “Whenever I wasn’t supposed to be glam or have a full face of make-up, I fight to keep it that way. It helps the audience.”

“Even at the beginning of my career, I always struggled to control my image,” she added. “It helps me when I wear less make-up because then I’m less glittery on the screen. I feel like I’m allowed to make ugly faces, like it’s more acceptable.”

We live in timealso starring Andrew Garfield, will open in theaters on October 11.
