Moscow says Hanks would join him and his friends in the park, filming them doing various scenarios that happened in the movie. In a certain scene in bigHanks and John Heard (who played Paul) play handball together, and Moscow says the scene reminds him of his childhood friend Ernest.
“When you watch the film, there’s a moment where you think, ‘That’s Ernest. He’s doing Ernest right there!’ “, says Moscow. “Ernest had these long arms and a big head, and he’d use his head to push me off and then he’d switch the ball from his long arm to his other long arm, and Tom did that.”
Hanks also paid close attention to the clothes the young boys wore and insisted he wear Converse in the film, because “it really affected how he walked,” says Moscow.
“He kind of embraced all the weird things about being a kid — those weird, awkward things — and [tuned] raised them and lived in it.”
Hanks also took time out to appear in some of the Moscow scenes – something he says was helpful as he learned director Penny Marshall’s filming style.
