A Redditor is sparking a strong conversation after refusing to share a bill with a large group and instead asking the server for a check with only their items included.
On Reddit, user RebelElan writes: “I was invited to a group dinner and decided to go. I usually decline because two couples in this group are freelancers and split is the checking type. They order expensive menu items, appetizers and cocktails while I get a moderately priced meal and car.”
After the dinner (which was attended by a group of nine people) ended, RebelElan says they decided to take matters into their own hands.
“I apologized, went to flag my server and asked if he would please separate my account from the others. He agreed.”

When the bills arrived, two couples expressed their displeasure, saying, “Oh, I thought we were breaking up as usual.” As RebelElan writes, this “prompted two other people in the group to also request separate checks, which the server was happy to do.”
The next day, the Redditor received a message from someone else in the group, stating that “they usually split the bill, because it gives everyone a chance to eat a good meal that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford.”
“I told her I wouldn’t be guilty if I stayed within my means and didn’t pay for whores,” writes RebelElan. “Then I said the only reason I came was because I thought the rogue couples wouldn’t be there because they’ve been doing it for years. They accuse me of disrupting the group vibe though. Did I? I’d think not because of the two who also asked for separate accounts.”
In the following comment, RebelElan says the group has since discussed and decided not to invite the two couples to group dinners: “The four of us will start a new group dinner at a different restaurant.”

Commenters on the post weighed in, and many agreed about the hassle of splitting the bill. “I fucking hate splitting bills evenly, it’s always the people who spend the most who want it,” wrote one.
“Splitting the bill because you wouldn’t be able to afford your fine meal otherwise means someone subsidizes your fine dining,” wrote another. “There is literally no way this can give everyone an opportunity to save money on their meal.”
Another offered a different perspective, writing: “If all the dishes are more or less the same price and people are ordering a bottle of wine to share, then it might seem a bit petty to say, ‘I’ll just pay my share’ – but at the same time, it’s really irritating to budget for your meal exactly and then find “no, now you’re slightly over budget”. ”
