Gangadhar Bhattacharya Wiki

Gangadhar Bhattacharya and Roy established the first Bengali bookstore along with India’s first magazine Bangal Gezette in Calcutta’s Chorbagan Street (now Amar Basu Sarani).

James Long, PN Bose, Swaminath Natarajan and Sambad Prabhakar have argued that the Bangal Gezette first appeared in 1816, and that Indian journalism therefore began solely on the initiative of the natives and not foreigners. However, we did not receive copies to substantiate this. The notice published by Harachandra Roy in the Government Gazette on May 14, 1818 is what is on record.
