New Tesla Update Dramatically Improves Range Prediction

Tesla’s range prediction tool now considers many more parameters to make its calculations more accurate. The feature offers real-time range calculations, similar to the Instantaneous Consumption feature in gasoline-powered cars. Tesla has been introducing new features and parameters to improve its prediction. The latest update promises to take it further and make it more accurate than ever before.

Some Tesla vehicles come in an optional Long Range version that offers more miles per kWh than the Standard or Performance versions. The two more expensive models in the lineup, the Model S and Model X, also have a tri-motor AWD option that offers higher performance but a slightly lower range than the dual-motor AWD models. Overall, the cheapest model in Tesla’s lineup, the RWD Model 3, provides the lowest range of 267 miles, whereas the dual motor AWD Model S travels the farthest on a single change at 375 miles.

Tesla’s latest update, which bumps the in-car software to version 2022.20.7, has reportedly introduced new parameters that could make its range calculations more accurate than ever. That’s according to the Twitter user and frequent EV tipster @greentheonly, who claims that the tool now takes into account tire pressure and many other variables to calculate range accurately. Some other factors used to estimate range include energy loss due to phone charging and 12V accessory use, as well as air density and battery heating and cooling. Tire pressure, especially, can significantly affect efficiency. According to one Twitter user, the difference between 42 and 45 PSI can result in a 20 wh/mi difference in efficiency.

Tesla’s Range Prediction Is Now Much-Improved

Tesla had earlier rolled out a slew of other improvements to its range prediction tool by incorporating many factors based on the local weather forecast. Back in May, the 2022.16.0.2 update made range calculations in Tesla vehicles even more precise. Before the update, Tesla only used elevation changes as one of its main parameters to gauge range. However, the update allowed the Navigation Energy Prediction tool in Tesla vehicles to take into account headwinds, crosswinds, humidity and ambient temperature data to predict range accurately. While the changes may not mean much for short trips, it is useful for folks who take their Teslas on long-distance road trips.

Tesla vehicles generally offer an excellent range, but as with any car, it is essential to accurately calculate the available range and convey it to the driver to eliminate range anxiety. In a recent Consumer Reports survey, more than one in four Americans said they would not consider buying an electric vehicle despite its apparent benefits. About 55 percent of respondents also expressed concerns about the range and the availability of chargers. With millions of people still unconvinced about EVs, Tesla and other automakers will have to do a lot to ease the range anxiety that most EV owners have, especially when they take their cars on long drives or road trips.
