And loyal followers were rewarded with a perfect ending as James Corden’s Smithy realized he was meant to be with Nessa.
But some sharp-eyed fans were quick to spot an absent face from the finale.
Some viewers will remember Barry’s Del Boy, Dick Powell, appearing throughout the series, whipping up random things.
He sold everything from satellite navigation on the black market to meat he stole from the slaughterhouse.

Dick is also the only resident of the island who only speaks Welsh.
Despite appearing in two episodes and being mentioned many times throughout the series, the dodgy salesman was not in the finale.
Co-creator Ruth Jones revealed that they were able to include Dick in the final script – but he didn’t make it into the final cut.
“I think in the original script we had Dick Powell. There just wasn’t room for him, God bless him,” she said at a press conference.
In an emotional scene on a cargo ship, Smithy got down on one knee and told his true love, who proposed in 2019’s festive cliffhanger: “Five years ago on Christmas Day, you asked me a question and I didn’t answer you.
“And I thought about it every day. And I’m sorry for letting you down.
Gavin and Stacey’s Gwen finally finds love in the last episode ever – and he’s a VERY familiar face
“I know it was messy and not perfect. But that’s because we’re messy and not perfect. But I love you, Nessa. I always have. Will you marry me?”
The saga is closed with a moving montage of the group celebrating at the couple’s modest wedding in a pub.
Writer Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa, said simply: “I hope we made you proud.” She added: “I’m not going to lie, I’m feeling a little exhausted!”
Meanwhile, James said: “Tears everywhere. It was probably the most emotional film set I’ve ever been on and it was kind of beautiful.”
The one-off episode, which aired at 9pm, was confirmed as the final installment of Gavin and Stacey, which first aired in May 2007, after three series and three Christmas specials.
It included some shocking twists as we met characters last seen in the festive one-off in 2019, in which Nessa proposed despite Smithy being engaged to Sonia.
This meant that the entire cast was ready for the new script.
Larry Lamb, who plays Gavin’s father, Mick, said of the latest episode: “I don’t think I can remember being so moved by anything.”
Alison Steadman, who plays Gavin’s mum Pam, added: “I don’t normally cry or get overly emotional but I was completely choked up.”
The episode opened with Smithy’s future wife being revealed as Sonia.
Their wedding day featured a cameo by Sheridan Smith as Smithy’s sister Rudi and a touching scene in which Neil The Baby, Smithy and Nessa’s teenage son, sang Paul McCartney’s version of the Beatles’ Blackbird.
James revealed that he approached Macca directly for permission to use the song.
That’s when Gavin finally brought up the group’s concerns about the nuptials, prompting a mad cross-country chase to catch a heartbroken Nessa, who left Barry Island to return to her old job on a freighter.
Dave Coaches’ minibus became their unusual carriage as the gang raced to Southampton Docks.
James said: “It was a wonderful way to cap it all off. I’m very proud of what we’ve done.”
