Gayle King Says She Doesn’t Like to Sleep with Underwear on Because She Likes to 'Feel the Breeze Down There’

Gayle King is getting real about her sleepwear (or lack thereof).

While appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show On November 14, the 69-year-old journalist revealed why she likes to wear as little clothing as possible when going to bed.

“I always sleep in a big old tattered T-shirt, but I don’t like to wear underwear,” she revealed. “Because I like to feel the breeze down there. At night, I work.”

Drew Barrymore — who once admitted she goes commando so often that her daughters once tried to put the pants on her as a joke — said she’s tried to instill in her kids the benefits of going pantyless every now and then.

“I used to tell the girls – they’re going to be really horrified by this – but I said, ‘You’ve got to let it breathe. Let’s take a breather,’ she recalled. “With those diapers on all the time? No-uh. We’ll just walk around and whatever happens, happens. And yes, women should feel the breeze.”

Barrymore, 49, shares Olive, 12, and Frankie, 10, with ex-husband Will Kopelman.

The conversation piqued King’s interest in what Barrymore likes (or doesn’t) wear when she closes her eyes.

“This is how I work. If nobody’s home, including the kids — they go and stay at dad’s for the night — I’ll sleep naked,” Barrymore said. “I love it. I lock all the doors and just parade around like a little jay.”

But going to bed naked (literally) isn’t the only part of Barrymore’s bedtime rituals.

The actress, who recently took on the role of Rest’s Sleep Wellness Advocate, shared with PEOPLE the calming routines that help her get a good night’s sleep.

“I always have a pile of reading on my nightstand, so if I have it in me, I might read a bit before I turn out the lights. If not, good night to all the cats and Douglas [her dog]I close my eyes and practically sleep until my head hits the pillow.”

King returned to Barrymore’s daytime talk show after appearing alongside Valerie Bertinelli and Gillian Anderson in October.

Inspired by Pamela Anderson’s dedication to going makeup-free on the red carpet, the four women filmed a segment completely bare-faced. “I don’t have a problem with being photographed without makeup, but it’s different when you’re on national television,” King said.
